Is this a safe temp for my cpu?

I ran CPUID HWMonitor while I was playing Planetside 2 for about 2 hours or so, after that I checked the max temps, and it showed 71c was the max. Is that safe, should it even reach that high?

Keep in mind that I used the PC nonstop whole day.

My CPU is the I7 4770 (non K) Stock cooler

And when I checked the current temps right after I exited the game, it was already somewhere about 55c and dropping, I don't know for how long it stayed 71c.

My idle temps are 28-39 same when browsing and doing other things.

Should I buy an after market cooler?

What case do you have? Make sure you have enough fans for airflow...what are your motherboard temps? If your motherboard is staying in a normal range, I would buy an aftermarket cooler.

Last time i was getting high temps i opened my case and cleaned the heatsink, it was full of dust, now my CPU doesn't go up 53ºC (and AMD works at higher temps than Intel) check your case airflow and your cpu heatsink

71 C at load with Haswell is ok. No issue there. At normal use 53 C should be checked but remember, haswell run hotter. My 4770 reaches 82 or so when at load .

Just remove the heatsink. Clear the residue of the thermal paste/compound on the CPU and heatsink. Apply thermal paste/compound like Arctic Silver etc on the top of CPU in the centre (Quantity of paste equal to less than normal pea size) and install heatsink again.

Also after removing heatsink, clean its fan.

Make sure you've goo air flow inside the case.

Rest your temps are not troublesome.

71c is well within limits. i wouldnt worry about it.

Planetside 2 is reasonably hard on the the CPU, so yes, that temperature is safe, and perfectly normal for the stock Intel cooler on a Haswell i7 (if it was above 80 I'd be a little more worried).

As you're not going to be overclocking with that chip, the only real reason to get an aftermarket cooler would be to reduce the noise level of the stock cooler.

AMD works at higher temps than Intel

Intel chips have a much higher thermal limit (105 is when the recent ones throttle, but for longevity, probably best to keep it below 90) than recent AMD chips (the FX 8350 really shouldn't be taken above 60 degrees Celsius).

There are 4 lines in CPUID so I don't know which temp to check for my motherboard.
And today it shows my max temp is 67c. while playing the game on max settings.

My case is Zalman z11 plus

Your temps are ok. Don't worry about it. Four temps being shown will be of each core. If you can post an image of the HWMonitor shoing temps here. Otherwise, you really don't need to worry about it.

Yeah it is strange isn't it? You'd think the more power hungry chip would also be hotter (or at least be more able to cope with more heat); it surprised me when I found out that that's not the case.
