Is this a viable upgrade path?

Hello all! Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'm looking to upgrade my desktop system to something better.

I currently have an i5 6500, gtx 1070 strix and a asus z170-e mobo...
I am thinking of swapping out the mobo and the CPU for better ones, I got the i7 7700k in mind and a asus strix z270 mobo, I will be changing my case too but that doesn't really matter... all I do is game, things like arma, squad... I average around 50 fps in squad on a high pop server, so I think the CPU upgrade is essential....

I'd love to hear some feedback!

No problem. If you have no intention of Overclocking then a good budget Air cooler or single radiator Liquid cooler would do the job just fine. Look at something like this:

Not Overclocking:

Corsair H60 Liquid > http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/hydro-series-h60-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler
Cryorig H7 Air > http://www.cryorig.com/h7.php
Cooler Master Evo 212X Air > http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212x/

If you do intend on Overclocking you are looking more at a Dual radiator liquid cooler or a high end Air cooler if you want good...
Yes your CPU would be limiting performance in high-pop areas much more than your GPU. The i7-7700K is a good choice with that Motherboard. Just checking, i assume you already have 16GB RAM? If not this would be a good idea to upgrade to if you are on 8GB. Also remember you will need an aftermarket cooler because K series CPU's don't come with one, if you need help picking one just say so. Hope this helps :)

your current mobo supports the 7700k

just make sure the bios is up to date before swapping cpu's

Noctua NH-D15 Air > http://noctua.at/en/nh-d15.html
Corsair H110i GT Liquid > http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/hydro-series-h110i-gt-280mm-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler
