Friend gave me old laptop (windows XP). You can see what happens on screen ( the same is even on BIOS screen):

When i connect laptop to external screen, the same comes to external screen (the only difference is that on external screen the image is fully extended on screen). What is the problem, which components I can replace? videocard? (it's laptop SONY VAIO, how to replace GPU, or how to replace failing memory?

(i have even captured video of screen of 15 seconds, you can see it here)

Solution

You can't replace the GPU. First check if there even is a discrete GPU! If it's not nvidia or ATI in there, it's just integrated graphics and your memory is failing. No sense in replacing it though, most likely the memory will be more expensive than replacing the whole thing!
It7s not covering "just the central part", it's covering EVERYTHING being output. If the computer has a discrete card, try updating the drivers, but if that doesn't help the GPU might be failing. If it has an integrated graphics solution, your memory is failing.

the same is, even on BIOS screen. so, no drivers problem. can you give me an image, where i will see how to replace GPU (or how to replace failing memory?)

thanks so much for help. As last question:
you mention "memory" and "GPU". With "memory" do you mean the GPU itself, or memory refers to RAM ?
I will see, maybe GPU is ok and just "memory" (i dont know what you call memory) fails and i can find it on ebay?

Memory is ALWAYs RAM, whether it's system RAM or VRAM. If you have integrated graphics, VRAM is the system RAM.

And yes, you can usually find memory in a ton of places, but ebay is asking for trouble

Write down the model and maybe I can give you a better diagnosis
