Is this PSU mounted at the top of the case?
If so, is there a grate there for air flow?

the grate and fan at the back is exhaust. The other end that you see here is Intake.
In a normal case, that intake grate would be to the outside. If your case does not have a grate at that location, then this must be to the interior of the case as you currently have it.

Yes, then. Your original photo shows the correct mounting of the PSU for your case type.

...and there is no need to keep the case side off.
