I am going to attempt to build my first budget gaming computer

My aim is to focus more on the video card/cpu. I want my parts to last me for a long time (4 or so years, college student that has to pay everything including college by myself) so I will not be overclocking anything.

Also, is everything compatible on my list?

Whoa way to much CPU/MB for the budget.

The Rosewill PSU happens to be OK, but certainly does not match what you are spending on processing power

You need to raise your monitor expectations and lower the total platform cost.

I was going to go with the i5-750 (194.99) originally until I found an i7-930 for 199.99.

I will not be upgrading my RAM over 3 GB as I just read a Tom's hardware article on how little difference 3GB/6GB/12GB RAM makes so I don't see the need for 64 bit OS.

The HDD you provided looks good.

Understood about the processor deal, but you are still paying for more MB than you need, and loosing quality and features just to get an i7-930.

The DFI is older, and has no USB 3 or SATA 6GB. You said you wanted longevity.

I've been building my own systems for going on 18 years now, and I promise you that RAM demands will ALWAYS increase. My first rig used 512kb as I recall. two years ago 512MB video RAM was enough. Now you need at least 1GB.

The article you read was written, as I recall, over a year ago.

Don't limit yourself, leave options open.

I didn't know that about the DFI Mobo which is why I'm posting here for help. I appreciate it.

Keeping the i7-930, is there a basic budget LGA1366 socket board you would suggest that could last me?

I figured that a lot of programs aren't 64-bit compatible such as Microsoft Office 2010 (I could be wrong) which is what I need since I'm a student in college. I wanted a computer for school but also a gaming rig as well. If I got Windows 7 64-bit would I be able to play new games as well as old and use programs such as Office 2010?

The only game I have a real issue with is Civ IV, that refuses to run on my win 7 64-bit. And Crysis can be slightly buggy sometimes, but then it always has been on any platform.

As to MS Office, MS says you can install either the 32-bit Office or the 64-bit version on 64-bit Win 7. I myself use Open Office.

I can't predict what other software you might be asked to use in school. Some of it might indeed require an older 32-bit OS like XP to run and getting Win 7 32-bit is no guarantee in itself.

Ok you just convinced me to go 64 bit. I was originally going to get 6GB of RAM but felt that it was overkill. I guess it'll be smart because 6GB should be more than enough for 4 years down the road.

I guess since this is a one-time purchase I'll upgrade the mobo/case/psu. I really didn't want to spend that much but I guess quality and a good product is better than a better price and a garbage product. I'll update my new specs in a bit.

You really should not buy PSUs based on brand, with the possible exception of Corsair.

The monitor you have chosen has a resolution of 1400 x 900. If you are trying to save money than don't waste it on the 5850, which would be overkill on that resolution. A 5770 would still be overkill and more reasonable.

It's a nice price on the EVGA board. It doesn't have the main feature most people buy X58 boards for.... dual X16 PCI-E slots. But then that is not why you are going that route.

Good advice from Proximon, which is not unusual.
The biggest overkill item I see is the HD5850. Like he said, for a resolution of 1440x900, even a HD5770 is more than needed. Personally, I'm running at 1920x1080 using either a HD4850 or HD5770, and all my games (which admittedly aren't latest FPS) run at high-max settings.
I'd add Antec (except 430W Basiq) and Seasonic to the PSUs you can buy on brand name alone.
