Is this an ok build for a gaming pc?

Hello all, I am new here so sorry for not doing this professionally.

I just bought components for my first "gaming" pc. I want to know what you think about it. My budget was only about C$1100; (I am not looking to overclock, just gaming on high settings and as multi media player for movies etc):


- Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB [WD Black (WD1002FAEX) 1000GB (1TB) SATA3 7200RPM 64MB Cache (OEM)]

- Intel I5-2500K (unlocked)

- Windows 7 home 64bit (I have read a lot about Win 8 sucking in regards to gaming and in general non-touch screen pc's; hence Win 7)

- Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX 8GB Desktop Memory Kit - DDR3, (2 x 4GB), PC3-12800, 1600MHz, CL9, Intel XMP Ready

- Galaxy GeForce GTX 60 Ti 1024MB GDDR5

- GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H Intel 7 Series Motherboard - ATX, Socket H2 (LGA1155), Intel Z77 Express, 1600MHz DDR3, SATA III (6Gb/s), RAID, 8-Ch Audio, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, PCIe 3.0, CrossFireX/SLI

- Thermaltake TR-700 700W Power Supply - Single +12V Output, 80 PLUS Bronze, Universal AC Input 100V~240V, Active PFC, 120mm Fan

- Cooler Master SGC-1000-KWN1 Storm Enforcer ATX Mid Tower Case - ATX, Micro ATX, 4x Ext 5.25", 1x Ext 3.5", 6x Int 3.5", 1x 200mm Red LED Fan, 1x 120mm Fan, 2x USB 3.0 Ports, 2x USB 2.0 Ports, Black

- MSI DH-18D5S 18X DVDROM Drive - DVD-ROM 18X, CD-ROM 48X, SATA

- And the small peripherals such as keyboard/mouse/surge protector....



I am iffy about some of the stuff such as the DVD Rom, OS, and whether or not I should partition my HD or I should get an SSD for the OS?

I haven't put it together yet because I want to be sure that I don't have to upgrade anymore.

I still have about $120 left in my budget.

its unbalanced or bad as i like to call it

-no point of a k chip when you dont overclock
-should have gotten ivy bridge if you are not overclocking
-black drives are not much faster than a blue drive, yet cost a lot more
-just broke your intel warranty with the ram. 1.65v is bad
-no point of a z77 motherboard if you are not overclocking
-would have gotten a 7850 instead for that price range
-bad power supply. look for something that is made by seasonic, antec, pc power and cooling, corsair, or xfx
-cheaper dvd drives out there


if you didnt buy a k chip and a z77 motherboard for non-oc purposes, you could have used that money and gotten a 7870 would would let you play at ultra settings rather than at high settings. just a way to save...

This is pretty good! I suggest don't buy things like the monitor and keyboard/mouse if you already have some. Pick up gaming controllers as you'll be using it for gaming. If you can pick up an optical drive that can read/write from/to Blu-rays, for not much more expensive, that'll be good. Apart from that, everything else seems to be good.

and since you are in canada, it makes literally no sense to buy stuff (that isnt ridculously cheap) before boxing day. boxing day would have cut costs by 100-150 dollars

xerxesaria please repost what graphics card you have, because a "60 ti" could mean a 560ti or a 660ti, which have major differences.

$1100 is your total budget, $1000 is your budget minus the OS, which is the hardware budget. You're saying you have $120 left in your budget, which means you're at $880.

The Z77 is fine, as well as the 2500k. The Memory on the otherhand you should change. RAM is cheap. The price difference between 1x8gb and 2x4gb is small. You should be grabbing 16GB of RAM (2x8gb) considering how relatively inexpensive it is. Your RAM looks to be $45.

*edit* Neither the 560 ti nor 660 ti have 1gb of ram, which means you have a 650ti, ($150) and you should grab a Radeon 7870 (+$90)

im sorry but i have read and those were the points that needed fixing (which was almost everything)

z77 is fine, and so is a 2500k. but its not fine if you are not overclocking it. its a waste

the 560ti has 1gb of ram. either way a 7850 is around that price point and performs better. or go 7870. one on sale for 209.99 after MIR at ncix

and speaking of prices, he should have bought on boxing day (dec 26th). black friday, but for canada

You have been warned about the PSU, but you need to pay attention to it.

I think you have the TR-700P, which is made by FSP. It might be OK at the loads you will place on it, but it would not have been recommended by anyone here.

1.65V RAM is inappropriate for Intel CPUs. The RAM controller resides on the CPU. Intel has published very specific parameters which, when exceeded, void the warranty on the CPU. For the i5-2500K those parameters are 1333Mhz CL9 1.5V. IF your RAM defaults to those settings and you do not adjust it to run at 1600Mhz 1.65V you will be OK. This might be the case.

Yet you didn't read that he has $120 left over. You were making it out as if he had nothing left over and couldn't upgrade the graphics because of the motherboard and CPU.



I see, there is a company that makes a 1gb model. Its marked at $165. Since you want NVidia, check out:

GTX 660 - $200

The power supply has decent reviews. This is just adjusting off what you have to make it better, not a complete teardown.

Thermaltake often changes model numbers and designs without changing the name of the PSU. CM does this as well.

Thanks all. So I have updated (exchanged) some items:

- 2TB WD Cav. Black HD,
- Corsair Vengeance 2X4GB DDR3 Ram (1.5V!!!!),
- Samsung CD/DVD Writer,
- Intel i5-3570K (They only carried "K", but that's alright I guess),
- Cooler Master 200mm (Megaflow 200) fan (for top portion of Storm Enforcer) [unfortunately it is not LED which is what I wanted, but that's ok too).

Waiting for your views about this update! Thanks a million.

-you wasted money on a black drive. a seagate goes for half the price. never had a problem with them. or you can get a blue drive, and it would perform the same.
-hope you didnt get some with those haircomb heatsinks. prevents you from installing coolers
-got a k chip? now overclock it. if not, you wasted even more money

I have been debating for a very long time whether to go for SG or WD. I looked at my current PC which I bought in 2008 and was manufactured by HP in 2007. The 650GB WD HD in it is still running very well (with only 90GB of free space on it), even though it is showing signs of aging (it takes it now about 10-12 sec on average to pull up all my music library of 15GB! So due to my personal experience with WD, I decided to go with it again....I am still debating it 'cause I can save $$$ if I go SG. They are still unopened so I can change my mind...I'll sleep on it. Maybe I'll go for blue.

Ram sticks are actually a good fit within my mobo. They come with heatsinks but they fit.

I am scared of OC, 'cause I've never done it EVER!! In fact, I got into PC gaming only 2 years ago, and found my current PC to be sufficient. But with all the new games coming out that are demanding, I like to have a decent rig. Maybe I will give OC a try once I set up my PC. I got the CPU and mobo for it, so why not!...

I will surely be back on this forum for OC questions!

He's saving you money, and knows what hes talking about.
So, let me reiterate what he's saying,
-The word "Black" in black drive is a marketing piece used to sell a marginally faster drive to the uninformed. Buy the Blue level drive or any other 'normal' hard drive for that matter.
-The letter "K" is an amazingly useful letter for people on forums trying to help out. Theres a simple process to decide if you need one. Do you overclock? No? Then you dont need it and can get away with a normal processor (or dare I say it, an AMD, *gasp*)
-And just a personal word of advice thermaltake power supplies, have always had a bad rap. Due mostly to the Tr2 series, it kinda gave anyone in the market cold feet about them. I wouldn't touch one with a 39 and a half foot pole. For the price theres much better, considering even OCZ are generally around that price.
Just my 2 cents,
I remember the day i'd spend hours price matching until I was able to bet $1000 down to $550, extreme couponing of the PC world.
