Everything looks good. I would save a bit of money on the Motherboard unless you really have your heart set on the Maximus Hero. The i5 is great for gaming. I would also stay away from the Hybrid drive especially if you are going to the SSD later. The 970 will be a beast for a while.

It looks good to me. If he is up to it, I would suggest upgrading to water cooling. I'm assuming he's going to overclock so water cooling will help with that. But besides that everything else looks great.

Will make a good rig that you'll be happy with, could look to a SSD down the road, and the Hyper 212 EVO will keep your CPU cool through prob 4.6 anyway.

Abit cheaper motherboard will get you an SSD just like I said.
Looks like you're trying to do a black and red themed build.
So a black cooler would look better+quieter and better.

is crucial a good brand? Is the 20 dollars upgrade to an 840 evo worth it, or is the MX100 good enough?

Also, is the Kingston V300 a good choice? It fits better with the color scheme even though he won't see it 😛

Crucial is one of the best SSD's and I will not choose a V300 for any build.
