Is this case fan too good to be true?

Solution

It's a you get what you pay for fan. It'll work for a couple off years probably and then fail. The amazon reviews seem to say that it's a really good fan for the price so why not go for it?

I can afford to pay much more than $8. If I can get a really good fan (high performance and quiet) for $20 then I will. The thing is, I was looking for really good fans and I found this one, without seeing the price tag. Then I saw the price and got worried:
- Why would anyone sell a fan that good for so low?
- Why isn't this fan more popular?

Well it's just that smaller not so well know company's try to make money by having decent fans for cheap. They do use cheaper components then but it will still be quite good so that the costumer will maybe reccomend it to others and so on. I have used 1,5€ fans in the past and they are now 5 years old and still going. You can't go wrong for that money.

I'm not sure how lepa came about their specs. Dvtests is a pretty reliable site, they tested the fans and came up with around 105 cubic meters of air per hour which translates to 61.8 cfm (cubic feet per minute). I'm also not sure how their 5v adapter works, the fans don't start spinning until 7v though once they are spinning the voltage may be able to be reduced.

They seem quiet in their tests though no telling how reliable the bearing is or isn't as far as durability. If money is no concern it may be worth trying for such a low price. Static pressure may not be all that great so if they're pulling air through a filtered intake the airflow may be reduced. It says they're rated at 1.9 mm/h2o which isn't too horrible but that's also at their rating of 80+ cfm. When air speed/airflow is reduced so is static pressure. If they can't reach the spec'd airflow they're not reaching that static pressure either.

Probably a reason lepa only gives them a 2yr warranty and such a low price in comparison. Other fan companies like phanteks and noctua give their fans 5 and 6yr warranties. For the price it's probably not terrible fan. Companies like noctua have brand recognition on their side and even though they're popular they need to live up to the hype. With all the enthusiasts out there paying premium prices and scrutinizing their products they'd be called out on it pretty fast if they were overrated.
