ASUS X99-E WS with i7-5820K CPU.

Currently I've got an ASUS H270M-PRIME with an i5-6600, 16GB Corsair DDR4 and an EVGA 970 SC.

The question I have is, is it worth me taking a step back to a system with more power, but less efficient than mine? I do the odd bit of light gaming, but nothing intense. I do use a few VM's for test servers, so the additional cores and RAM are always welcome. The 5820K certainly doesn't disappoint with it's spec, but it does come with a hefty 140w TDP, nearly 100w more than my current 6th gen i5! The motherboard itself is feature packed, with two integrated NIC's (again handy for VM's), and also takes DDR4 RAM.

So should I stick with what I have and keep my eyes open for reasonably priced 6700 / 7700 newer, more efficient CPUs, or should I grab the bull by the horns and buy the above?

Well unless the combo comes with a cpu cooler or you have a good watercooler that supports socket 2011 then i would pass. Also keep in mind that you'll need quad channel ram, not your regular old cheap dual channel ddr4; another added expense to the upgrade.

I had completely forgotten about the quad channel ram! In that case it's not looking so appealing now. Best to stick to 6th or 7th gen i7 I think, at least I can retain the board, ram etc.

You could also consider a Ryzen 3600/ 3700x, or even an Intel 10th gen setup, like a 10600k/10700k. I would not put any money into your current platform. The price of a 6700k/7700k alone, can equal that of a better multitasking R5 3600, and a decent B450 board, like the MSI Tomahawk max.

That's the exact build I use for most of the few people I'll still build for. I'll drop to a 2xxx series CPU in the more budget builds.
But the price of the 10th gen Intel's is pretty appealing imo.
