Is this CPU + MB good for price

i have an out of date MB and CPU and have a fair amt. of money to upgrade, i use my PC primarly for gaming so i obviously need good quality, the motherboard and cpu i have selected are these

i simply want to know if these are good for the money or if there is anything much better WITHOUT increasing price too much.

i also currently have a 500W PSU, would i need one with more wattage to handle these?

Your PSU will have no problem running an I7 however depending on the brand of the power supply and what GPU you will be using plays in to that.

Also, for gaming a X58 platform won't give you much advantage if you are not planning to go for multi card setups.. In that case, you are better served with an i5 750.. In case you are looking upto the X58 platform for future compatibility then, with gaming as your prime focus you'll be better served by going the AMD AM3 route.. An AMD Phenom II X4 965 is great for gaming and the AM3 platform will not only save you precious $$ but also be compatible with the soon to be released hexa-core processors from AMD.. BTW the amount of muscle you require on a PSU matters mostly on the video card you've ( or plan to buy ) and then the rest of the components follow.. The brand also matters..

hmm i have to do research if i really want to go with AMD over intel, i dont know too much about AMD gaming setups, i currently plan to have only one 5850, but for longterm uses i do plan to crossfire 5850's or better. im not disregarding your advice to go with AMD its just that most gaming rigs ive seen run i7's

That PSU is not gonna cut it with a 5850 attached to it. It might run it for a little but it will most likely fail and could potentially take out half your system when it does.

500 watt PSU is Recommended with at least 40 Amps on the 12 volt rail the unit you have only has 36 Amps.

The PSU is the last place you want to be cheap with a cheap PSU can be devastating to the system whether it be instability or catastrophic failure make sure you get a good quality unit preferably a Corsair, SeaSonic, Antec and even some OCZ units arent bad but stay away from their cheap unite they are garbage

alright, not sure if this helps but i do have an old generic 300W from a previous computer, would the coolmasters pass if i used the older one to power fans/HDD/CD drives?

NO get a better PSU dont mess around with PSU's it could be very bad and not worth it. Fans and Hard drives might add up to 20 watts if that the bulk of the power needs lie with in the grphics card and the Unit you have would barely be able to power just that let alone the rest of the computer.

No disregard felt.. Check out the best gaming CPU's article and you'll come to know that for pure gaming, a Phenom II holds better value over the i7 X58 setup.. well let me put it this way, i currently have around 400 to spend, how ever in june im getting a little over $900 making for a grandtotal of almost $1300, so chances are if i decided to crossfire 5850's i would be spending around 600 on that, then i would wanna go with atleast a decent 600W psu so thats another $75. so i would be left with around around 600 to spend on a MB and CPU. so the question becomes what would combo would be best for 600? ( when i say 600 i dont necessarily mean spending all of it, just within 600).
