I've had my computer for 6 years now and about a year or two back I decided to upgrade from an Intel Pentium g4500 to a Intel core i3-7100. I choose the CPU from a recommendation from my brother who had the same CPU. I rushed into it all excited and forgot to realize that he has a weaker GPU than me. I have the intel core i3-7100 paired up with an RX 580 8gb and have bottlenecked hard for the past year or two and am considering and upgrade, but I do have a budget. I wanted to know if anyone knew if an Intel Core i5-6500 is worth the upgrade or not. I've been contemplating it and can't seem to make the decision myself so I wanted to hear some other opinions before I make the decision to buy it.

Here are my pc specs
MSI H110M-A PRO M2
Intel Core i3-7100
XFX Radeon RX 580 8gb
8gb of DDR4 (It's been 6 years I forget which brand it is and can't be bothered to open the case in the spot it's in right now)
500gb samsung 860 EVO SSD
No brand SATA III 120 gb SSD
Western Digital 1TB HDD (9 years old)
DIYPC case

BLS4G4D240fsb.8FADG is the part number for both sticks.
I believe this is the kit you bought or at least very close to it. https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/bls2k4g4d240fsb
That memory can likely be overclocked from 2400MT/s up to 2666 @1.2v or 2800MT/s @1.25v. You might even be able to reach 2933-3000MT/s at 1.35-1.37v. If you don't currently need 16GB, just reuse your ram in a new motherboard and buy a better kit later on.

If you get the Ryzen 5 1600 AF with a B450 motherboard, that will cost around $155-190 depending on the motherboard you get. A 2x8GB DDR4 2933/3000/3200 kit is going to be around $65-85 with CL16 timings. You will likely want a better CPU cooler that is reviewed at least as good or better than a...

For reference I went from an older i7 to Ryzen 5 (3600). Noticed my max framerates didn't increase much (to be expected at 3440/1440) but my minimum framerates did where I was suffering from CPU bottlenecking.

Don't forget to factor in applicable taxes to your budget.

I personally would try to get a good B450 motherboard so you got the option later on to upgrade to a better cpu without another motherboard purchase. Most of the offerings from MSI are quite good. I personally would also check the used market for a good deal on a b450 tomahawk.
