ok so i have a HP Z400 workstation and im wondering if im upgrading from a quad core cpu to a hex core cpu will i see any performance boost/benefits in games such as doom 4 battlefield 1 the witcher 3 and the like below are my specs?

XEON W3565 STOCK SPEEDS ON CLOSED LOOP CPU COOLER
16 GIGS DDR3 ECC RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+ GPU
475 WATT PSU

the hex core cpu i want to upgrade top is the XEON W3680 which is basically the same as an i7 980X

so will i see a performace boost is this cpu worth the upgrade

Solution
Games wont use more than 4 cores, and since it has a lower clock speed, upgrading would actually decrease your performance. Look for an upgrade with a higher clock speed and that is also newer. An i7 980 would actually help a bit, but its best to upgrade to a newer platform altogether. If your wanting to keep the Xeon route, the E5-1630 v4 is a great option.

No, it is slightly faster.

W3565 @ 3.2GHz to W3680 @ 3.33GHz

Not enough to be worth the upgrade for gaming though.

Oh, you're right, was looking at them the opposite way :p. But yeah, not worth upgrading.
