Is this GPU beyond self repair?

I was having random crashes and reboots, when I went to unplug the GPU i found the power connectors had been damged. Here's a pic of the 8pin pcie connector: http://www.imgur.com/TOMJ9kG.jpeg

When I went to plug the GPU back in, the computer won't boot and the PSU behaves as if its a short. With no PCIE power connected the PC boots fine. Same situation with the paperclip test on another psu... treats it like a short and wont even spin up.

So I'm guessing i need to deal with warranty RMA etc, because I dont think this is something I can fix. Unless there is a solution?

Its quite hard to tell I would say that if the pins are still intact there may still be hope. And the short you may be talking about is how they are insecurely secured probably when you have a connection attached. There is also quite a bit of dust there you may want to use can air to blow that out. Which also may help with the leads of the card. Is this a new GPU or a old one and what have you done to secure the connections in place once the plastic broke off? Have tried using electric tape to secure it down normally the pin connections will snap into place securely that is why I ask. Also lastly what on earth did you do to have that happen (Sorry had to ask)

Interesting. Any idea how the damage occurred? Was the plug forced somehow? It is hard to tell from the picture, but it appears as if the dividers are actually melted?

Even without the separating pieces, it shouldn't be shorting. I'd take a look at PCIE connector. Try using a multimeter to see if there is connectivity between the hot and ground lines.

@Wigg: Yea I'm still a bit perplexed by the condition as well hopefully nothing melted or shorted.
@Bromeh: I'm not sure they would take it back in a RMA situation because of the condition and judging whether it was the user who caused the damage or not.

It looks a lot like another plug was forced into its plug, as there is no heat discoloration

There is a good chance they won't cover that under warranty because it looks like physical damage.

If i was to hasten a guess I would say someone tried force the 8pin CPU connector into a 8pin PCIe plug

I hope it doesn't mess up the chances of a successful RMA. Anyway I got the GPU April of last year, and I've only reseated it once or twice. Never noticed this damage and didnt start having problems up until a couple months ago seemingly out of the blue (actually I had left it overnight at the PC shop for some help troubleshooting some RAM issues that were resolved). I haven't done anything to secure the connections (not sure if you're refferring to the metal pins or plugging in the PCIE connector but I've touched neither), as the PCIE connectors seemingly attach fine.

Not sure what you mean with the electric tape, tape it when I plug the PCIE connector in?

Fortunately nothing is melted, I found part of the plastic piece in the PCIE connector when I removed it and the bit on the side was loose and fell out. As to a cause, my only guess is the cables in my case were overly taut and pulled in one direction too much for too long and me removing the connector was the last straw. I don't know how possible that is.

As brownie said i think it's safest to get an RMA but I'm not looking forward to dealing with Diamond (card is a Diamond HD7970 3GB). All of their phone numbers on the site are disconnected... If someone knows a # for Diamond that works that would be great... Kitsune do you really believe that's a possibility? I'm extremely screwed if it's not covered. I'm going to be playing on a 6670..

I was referring to securing the pci-express connection down securely completely without moving around. Which is why I was saying electrical tape to see if you can get it to go 100% no wiggling around. And that is very shady of diamond to act that way no working numbers hmm....

So alright: I used the electrical tape, blew the dust out of the GPU, plugged it back in and got a display. Unfortunately it looks like it's corrupted or in some way damaged, because after it booted into the desktop the screen changed to this: http://www.imgur.com/H3IjVzh.jpeg

It's also giving me 2 or 3 striped lines when it starts to boot up. Any further ideas or is it now really beyond my control?

Okay, they said they wouldn't replace the card because of the missing plastic, but they tested it for two days and said it worked absolutely fine on benchmarks and gaming.

So some good and bad news I guess. They're shipping it out to me today, but, it'd be cool to get some guesses now: is there any other plausible reason the GPU would not even let me boot into my desktop?

Let's just hope it just works..

It probably wouldn't let you boot due to the power supply problem. Ensure that the PCI plugs you are using are actually outputting the correct voltage at the correct pin.

Can you fire up your desktop using integrated graphics, or a different video card?

Okay so, I'm upset, confused, at wits end and pulling my hair out. It's not the power supplies, theyre both fine and the GPU does the same thing with both. I've never had a PC problem I cant fix right away. This is such a miserable experience...

It must be a damaged motherboard, then? Why on earth is it this bad? If Diamond found no problems with the card, why the HELL won't it boot in my system????? The other GPU boots fine.... but if I overclock it the screen goes purple and with lines everywhere and it's a restart. Is that connected? I don't know what to do anymore. I'm in PC hell. I wish I could just give up and buy a custom-built. I put so much time into this and now I'm just stuck with an expensive paperweight.

Would a video of the problem be of any help?

My only guess is damaged motherboard. What else does this to a computer?

I don't know if this is allowed here and I apologize if it isn't but if someone is able to help fix this problem I would be more than happy to paypal you a small sum. Please help... thanks...
