i have a sapphire 740g mobo with ddr2 ram and im getting a amd phenom ii x4 black edition cpu i am wondering if a ati radeon 6870 could be used on this system

It will be compatible. They are all backward compatible but you probably won't get to use your 6870 completely. You will probably be bottlenecked by the bandwidth available for PCIe x16. Hopefully you meant you have a PCIe 2.0 x16 :)

thanks guys. for the moment i dont mind if my gpu is bottlenecked because i will soon be getting a new motherboard and all the other components are decent.

Why do people keep saying this? x16 PCIe 1.0 is the same amount of bandwidth thats in x8 PCIe 2. If PCIe 2.0 x8 is good enough for CF OR SLI, why is it not good enough for a single card? It will be fine.
