Hi,

I'm playing Far Cry 4 at 1360x768 resolution and my GPU (Galax GTX 970 EXOC Black) is reaching 77 Celcius. I have V-Sync on and Custom settings recommended by the GeForce Driver.

Is this temperature normal?

Solution
Since your factory preset Temp Limit is 80-82c, then you are doing very well in a hot climate. The Temp Limit can be thought of as a temperature target that your GPU attempts to maintain through increased/decreased fan speeds, voltages, and Turbo Boost clocks. Check PrecisionX/Afterburner for your exact setting. This is really the operating temperature at which your card is supposed to run as a maximum under normal operating conditions.

People that are able to keep their temperatures under that number are going to see higher Turbo Boost clocks, but ultimately, 80-82c is normal. If you're trying to set an aggressive fan profile, you better be getting higher Turbo Boost clocks in return for your effort and noise levels. Otherwise...
What you want to be sure of is that you are not 'thermal throttling' your card.

77c is at the top end of what I'd personally like to see in my card. For my 970 (EVGA) the default was set to 82c for thermal throttling. I don't know what yours is set to, but it might be throttling itself and keeping the temp down to 77c. I had to use PrecisionX software to set a custom fan curve. By default my fans were barely kicking in to keep noise levels down. I had to make the fans a little more aggressive to keep the temps down. Now I don't hit 70c

Are the fans blowing like a turbine?

One way to tell if your card is throttling to keep temps down is to run a benchmark like Unigine Valley. It will tell you the temperature of your card and what its clock is at. You'll see it clock itself down to keep temperatures down if you are in fact suffering thermal throttling. If this is the case, you need better airflow. There are a number of ways to do this, but I'd start with using Precision X software and set a custom fan curve that is a bit more aggressive. Make the fans at 100% when it hits 80c if it isn't already.

My idle temperature does not reach 60C, it's actually around 36-38C.

I adjust the fan curve so that it will reach 100% speed in 60C.

I will do the Unigine Valley benchmark later to see about the cards performance on high temps.

THank you everyone for the answers.

100% at 60c might be a bit aggressive. It'll work of course, but I personally wouldn't want all that noise. You can probably loosen up the curve a bit, go a little higher in temps. Shoot for about 70c -75c or so as a max temp, so you can loosen your fans to meet that goal. That's what I shoot for. My curve is set so that at 70c my fans are at only 60%, and it is able to hold me at 70c-75c with that low a % rpm.

Otherwise, there's no point in arbitrarily seeking out a lower temperature if there isn't a commensurate payoff in terms of higher Turbo Boosts.

Really, its impossible for anyone to judge your temperature as a number all by itself. We would also need to know if your fans are running abnormally high, or if any of the other Turbo Boost 2.0 variables are doing something funky.

Hi,

An update just in case you guys want to read it.

I run the Unigine Valley at Ultra Settings with AA set to 4x

It reached 75C and it does not lower the clock speed.

I also monitored the GPU temp while playing FC4 again.
It turns out that it only reach 77C on the first time loading the game, after that it only plays on 50-66C.

Thanks for all your answers. 😀
