Hi All,

I'm currently compiling all of the items to build my computer and have a question regarding the motherboard. I figure, since this is the device that talks to all of the other components of the computer, I wont cheap out on it. I showed my build to a friend and he told me that he thinks the motherboard I have chosen is overkill. I'll post the link below. Any suggestions for a different motherboard?

Currently the build is:
-Corsair Vengeance Blue 8 GB (2X4 GB) PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM Dual Channel Memory Kit CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
-Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE250BW
-NZXT Phantom 410 Mid Tower USB 3.0 Gaming Case - White
-Corsair CX Series 750 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Bronze ATX12V/EPS12V 744 Power Supply CX750M
-ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards MAXIMUS VII HERO

-Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54570

I would also appreciate any other advice.

Thanks

This is $345 .... MSI Z97 G45 + 4690k ... current generation CPU and overclockable .... excellent gaming / OC Board.
As others have said, you are spending a ton of money for overclocking features you can't use...... kinda like a retired school teacher in Miami adding getting 4 WD and off road package for a vehicle that will face it's toughest challenge in driving to Bingo on Saturday night.

Your MoBo / CPU Combo was $406 .... this combo will nicely overclock and saves enuff money to get a CPU cooler

That's $60 in ya pocket will just about cover top notch a CPU cooler ..... blue is $5 cheaper

Maximus VII is a very high end overclocking board. It's not overkill if you plan to do a major overclock with water cooling.

If you just need a good, solid board for mainstream use...maybe with a moderate overclock, there are some more cost effective options.

For your selected CPU, any Z97 series mobo is overkill.

Asus Hero VII is a powerful mobo with loads of overclocking potential. But you have selected a CPU which is factory locked so this mobo is definitely overkill in this aspect otherwise it has been highly recommended.

Yes it is definitely an overkill because it features advanced ASUS overclocking and tuning features that can only really be used with an unlocked 'K' CPU and very high end build. It is really the creme of the crop and intended for enthusiasts looking for the best of the best.

As EasyLover says, any Z97 board is not much use for you since you don't have an unlocked CPU. If you want, you can still get them just for the features they offer but I suggest a good H97 board such as the ASUS H97 PLUS which is around £75-80.

I'd also suggest the Phanteks Pro over the Phantom 410

Your RAM is quite tall and will hit most CPU coolers. This RAM is a lot faster (DDR3-2133 CAS 9) and is $1 cheaper
$87 - 10% off w/ promo code EMCPAPF35, ends 9/10 = $79.98

Finally, I can't recommend an SSD unless you already have at least a 4690k and a top end GFX card. I also see no HD and that 250 GB will fill up fast. Unless ya have a HD already, I'd get an SSHD instead of a SSD and get 2 GB of storage

SSD Boots in 15.6 seconds
SSHD boots in 16.5 seconds.

I'd avoid any Corsair PSU with a "C" in the model designation.....a 750 will handle up to (2) 770s or (2) 280x's. Suggest the XFX Core Edition 750 depending on ya GFX cards
