Hi all,

Just wondering whether the motherboard I've selected in this build is suitable/compatible? I'm only concerned because at the bottom of this link, it says:

"Some Intel H81 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs."

I'm new to pc building, so I haven't a clue what this means in relation to the rest of my build- is it related to the i5 CPU I've chosen?

Here's the build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/kingmiltank/saved/HrjV3C

Thanks,

Tim

What that statement means is.
The Motherboard was made and designed before that CPU was released, Meaning you will need to update the bios on the motherboard in some occasions for it to work. When the motherboard is made in a factory they should flash it to the newest version so this may not be needed.

The i5-4590 is a refresh version so depending on how old the stock the motherboard came from it may or may not have the newest BIOS supporting it. If it doesn't you'll need another CPU to plug in so you can flash the BIOS before you can use the Haswell refresh version.

Hmm ok I don't have an extra CPU (the one in this laptop is very old) can't afford to get another CPU. Is it worth risking it or choosing a different motherboard? If so, which one would you recommend for that build?

I'd check other models maybe the B85 models and see if one doesn't say you may need a BIOS upgrade. Or change the CPU to a non refresh version.
