The i7 isn't really helpful for gaming. It gives you very little boost in FPS. I would get an i5-4690k.
Everything else is pretty much good except for the ram
If you want to save a little bit of money get 8gb. You don't need 16gb for gaming.

Yes, it's a bit overkill, as an i7 has more threads than needed and the 980 just isn't worth it for the price. What's your budget? A build with more bang for your buck can be gotten.

Yes, yes it is. If your playing at 1080p the 980 is overkill a 970 will do fine. And at the moment no games make use of an i7 so an i5 4690k would give you equal performance in games. And no games use even close to 16gb of ram, most dont even get close to using 8gb.

No, not really, I would downgrade to a 4690k though. Get a better CPU cooler, 120mm water is not going anywhere, get at least a 240mm or 280mm set up. The 980 is a great card and will last a good long while, with 4GB on it, getting 16GB of RAM is not a bad idea. Would up the PS to 750W so you can add another 980 down the road when you need it, it's a better upgrade path in graphics than replacing it with a new card. I would go with an SSD and HDD instead of a Hybrid drive, just me.

For 1080p I would go for a 4690k, 8Gb(2x4Gb), GTX970, 250Gb SSD, 1Tb hdd, and Evga B2 or G2 750w. For 1440p just add a 2nd 970 or go with the 980.

well, it might not be neceserry if your on a budget, but your pc will be up to date longer. if you add a 850w powersupply you can just add a second gtx 980 in one year and keep it insanely fast till 2017 or so

Just a note on the D14, the D15 is out and out performs the D14 pretty well. If were talking BIG air then may as well go for the top dog. But for that money I would go with a Swiftech H220X instead, hanging that much mass and volume of metal off my MB does not appeal to me much.

EDIT: on the above, I would not advise getting 1600 RAM today, either 1866/8 or 2133/9 would be my recommendation. I think you can fine either flavor at 1.6V.

DDR3 1866 is the description of the memory speed in Data Rate in M/T (mega transfers per second)

1866 is NOT the frequency in the I/O bus or memory clock. The I/O bus is 933Mhz for 1866 RAM.....

As a general rule of thumb, the JEDEC module name is 1/2 of the memory I/O bus clock, the I/O clock is 4 times the memory clock on the stick itself.

For example on DDR3 1866 memory:
Memory clock 233Mhz, Cycle time 4ms, Bus clock 933Mhz, Data Rate 1866MT/s, Name PC3-14900, Peak Transfer Rate 14933MB/s

My blabla doesn't help him but your BS does? He came here asking for help, had some questions about building a rig, so perhaps we should try to give him truthful answers if we can. How could you assume he knows what your talking about? You say he sees "1866 mhz", well I don't? Show me where in any description of a memory stick it says "1866 mhz"?

A bit of truth and facts don't hurt anyone, now perhaps he knows 1866 is not the frequency memory operates at. Why is that confusing, how does that hurt anyone? He did not know what you meant by 1866 and you mislead him, I tried to inform him. I trust this person is intelligent enough understand, it's not all that hard to get.
