Hi, there.

So, my PSU went up in smoke today and had to grab a replacement one just to check the other components weren't fried. I ran to the nearest computer store opened on a Sunday (TigerDirect/Comp USA) and grabbed this one.

What I want to know is, is this PSU any good? and, will it work well for my PC? I don't want another smoke machine.

These are my PC specs:

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz
Lynnfield 45nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 664MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Gateway H57M01 (CPU 1)
Graphics
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (PNY)

I suspect the biggest power draw is my video card, but you are the experts.

I installed the new PSU and everything is fine. No components were damaged.

From here on out, I'll give a brief summary of what happened for the benefit of those who might experience the same thing and are searching google for answers.

I was resting my eyes on my bed, PC was on doing its thing, and suddenly I hear a weird sound. When I look at my PC, there was a LOT of white smoke coming out of it. I IMMEDIATELY unplugged the power cord, opened my PC and noticed some sort of oil or grease splattered on the bottom side of the case, which I wiped (it wasn't much). I thought for sure the other components were fried, so I ran to the nearest store and grabbed a PSU (the one listed above). I ran home and installed it and everything worked fine. So, I started researching and found this video.

It appears the fan on my PSU stopped working, and the rest is history. It smelled HORRIBLE. I think I can still smell it. Nevertheless, if this happens to you, just know that there is still hope the other components on your PC are fine.

No they are very well known. The reason they are not found on our tier list is we only have models introduced in the last 3 years to stay current. Ultra pulled off a single good model called the Ultra X3. It was at the time of review about 5 years ago a tier 1 unit at over 1000 watts and a tier 2 under 1000 watts. Literally every other model is tier 4 or 5.

The newegg tier list still has them.

They use some bottom of the barrel OEMs. Andyson, ShenZhen RuiSheng Yuan and ATNG are their manufacturers.

They are the TigerDirect in house brand and do not send units out for review because they know what reviewers will find. Newegg also has an in house brand called Rosewill and they went in the opposite direction. Their units are generally excellent.

Uktra are hit and miss , mostly miss , had an Ultra 550 watt that went bad in 3 years , did not bother with warranty , bought an Antec 650 watt to replace it , Sesonic, XFX , Corsair are almost always good , you need 500-550 watts, more if you plan on adding a video card

Very well, then. Thank you for your input. I'll return this one and get a Seasonic.
