Is this suitable for RX 480

Hi all,

I was looking at purchasing the "new" AMD RX480 and using this to replace (as don't believe it can X-Fire with the RX280 3G), but was unsure if my CPU had enough grunt to be able to support (not bottleneck) this upgrade. As I was looking at upgrading to being able to game at 1440p!

Ive got a LGA 1150 i5 - 4670K with 16GB of RAM, and a hyper 212 evo cooler. The case is also a Zalman Z11.

Many thanks,

Yeah the cpu is plenty to handle a rx 480, especially at 1440p. A higher resolution generally takes load off the cpu and puts more load on the gpu. An RX 480 will run almost everything at 1440p 60fps or more, but not at max settings in many games. If you want to max out games at 1440p 60fps+ a 1070 would be a better choice if you can afford it.
1440p...would be iffy but the system looks like you can drop in the RX480 without an issue. I would like to ask though, what is the make and model of your PSU and if you're on any overclocks? Would help us if we knew of your motherboard's make and model as well.

Apologies, no haven't overclocked the CPU as never tried as wasn't sure if the Hyper 212 Evo would be enough. So its still at its base GHz. Ive got a corsair CX750M I believe. Motherboard is MSI Z97 Gaming 3 ATX

Lovely thank you, what sort of things are the default to drop to get to a nice 60fps?

Any GPU intensive settings, so things like MSAA anti aliasing, ambient occlusion, tessellation, shadow quality, things like god rays or volumetric lighting, texture quality. It can vary from game to game which settings are going to have the biggest impact on fps. Read performance guides for the games you play, a lot of times they will give you benchmarks comparing certain settings on or off and the frame rate impact they may have.

I wouldn't depend on the CX series of units from Corsair. If possible I'd ask you to switch the unit to something more higher in quality.

As per the comment about game settings, I'm more of a person to try out each setting and what it does to the eye candy+performance of the system. It's best to start with only working with the resolution and then work your way up by adding more details to the game's settings window.

Hmm would be a pain having to re install a new power supply :/, appreciate the info. Yes I'll have to give that a go. Thank you once again
Also your link doesn't work, comes up with Error 404

I've owned many CX corsair power supplies and so far not even 1 failed or caused damage to my parts/computer. Also my friend owned many different CX power supplies and he is pleased with them.

It could be just pure luck but still I don't think they are that bad.

Thanks for your input, *touch wood* mine has worked flawlessly for 2 and a half years so I can only say the same
