I really want to build a PC that is great and will last quite awhile (~2-3 years) without having to be upgraded. Is this system good for that? I already have a computer with a GTX 770 & i5-4590 that I was planning on selling to a friend once they can buy them so I have pretty much all parts, I just plan on upgrading.

CPU: Intel i5-4690k. I would like to overclock this to at least 4.2GHz.

GPU: MSI Armor 2X GTX 980 Ti

RAM: 16GB Kingston DDR3-1866

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD & Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Thanks!

I dont see the reason to sell your'e computer. You already have a pc with a i5 4590 and you plan on upgrading to a i5 4690k, that does not make sense to me. If you Are gong to upgrade, i would take the step to skylake and get a i5 6600k, z170-a board, ddr4 memory.

You already got a good rig, i5 4590 and gtx 770 is good for 1080p. I would wait to around mid 2016, sell the computer, build a skylake pc with a Pascal card. Pascal comes out ca Q2 2016 AFAIK. So if you can live with that 770 half a year, you got a plan.

Upgrading to Skylake is way too expensive for me. Buying a whole new motherboard that looks nice with a new kit of RAM also makes the cost way too much for me right now. I've already got a really nice motherboard that is very new that I don't want to get rid of. The reason I'm getting a 4690k is so that I can overclock it, as I've had my 4590 for awhile. The 980 Ti is just to further help my computer last a long time.

Also, I'm not selling my entire computer. Just the CPU and GPU.

I would keep the pc, save up money, buy a skylake pc with a Pascal card mid 2016. That is my opinion. You do not have Munch money now, but you can save up much money in half a year.

If that sounds like a bad plan for you, Save some penny's and keep your'e cpu, sell the 770 and buy a 980 ti. The 4590 can keep up with a gtx 980 ti. There wont be a bottleneck, if there would, it would be very minimal.

But, it is your'e decision, you are the boss:)

Edit: Btw, when i am thinking of it, if you only Are going to sell the cpu and gpu it actually sounds like a good plan you have there. But, the i5 4590 can keep up with a 980ti, just as you know. But of course, the i5 4690k would be better Yes:)

Thank you, I appreciate the input. The main reason I can't really save up is because I'm asking for most of this stuff for christmas. The GPU (which I'm buying) I've been saving up for for almost 2 years now so I'm getting a little impatient. I also think the 980 Ti is one of the best bang-for-buck GPU's on the market right now that will last a really long time.
