Is this the best i can do for <$1000?

Solution
I would change the motherboard with a Z68 one. Better chipset, upgradeable to Ivy Bridge and PCI-E 3.0 and with higher quality components (this particular model)

ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Also PSU isn't appropriate for a 1000$ build

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

The Gen3 has a great feature set, ill replace my MB with that.

i'm unsure why i need to go from 600W to 650W on my current build, it looks like THW didnt have any problems SLI'ing 460's which most likely has a greater power draw than a single 6970. i only say this because the 600W corsair is cheaper.

Its much better to spend a few extra dollars to be safe with power supplies, also if you buy a good one it will not have to be replaced for new upgrades to your build.

IMO it better to be safe than sorry

I have to agree, somewhat.

I was disappointed to see SLI 460's being used, and disappointed to see mATX motherboard in there as well - especially as its more pricey than the ASRock Extreme3 Gen3. While it might provide the best performance now, there's really no where for the build to go after that. It was obviously build for a single purpose (to get the best performance for right here right now - which i guess is the whole point, but still....)

600w PSU is enough for a single 6970.

Not sure if a 650w PSU is a good idea for a GTX580? 700-750w recommended? With 900-1KW for SLI?

Motherboard also seems fairly cheap and lacking features, only 1 PCIe x16 ?

ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 would be a much better motherboard choice.

while this is a <$1000 build, you end up sacrificing MoBo quality, HDD speed, and future upgrade costs... ive decided to get this GTX 580 and play the Rebate game:

and im going to switch to the 650w PSU, even though the GTX 580 has less TDP than the 6970. thanks guys, you CAN get a 580 for <$1000... if you play the rebate game.
