Is this transfer speed normal or too slow for a usb 3.0

Hey all,

I have a WD ultra metal edition external hard drive. When I transfer movies of stuff from my PC (HDD) to my external hard drives, I only get speeds of about 30-35 Mb/s on average, sometimes it even drops to 15-20 Mb/s.

I plug it into the SS slot in my pc, so it should be transferring data faster than that right?

With USB 3.0 external drives I typically see 80-120MB/s, so yeah, that's out of the norm. USB 2.0 even allows for up to 60MB/s, though in practice you'd likely see about 35MB/s.

It's possible you need to get USB 3.0 drivers for the controller chip and until you do you're stuck with it being a USB 2.0 port - after all USB 3.0 is just USB 2.0 plus 5 extra pins for SS so if SS isn't configured via driver then the USB 2.0 still works.

Hi there Mike 777,

That is unpleasant. 🙁

I would totally agree with joex444. You can start with just installing your USB 3.0 drivers. You can find those on your MOBO's website.
Also, you can see if you will get similar transfer speed if you attach the drive to some of the ports on the back of the computer case.

In case the issue persists, you can test both your internal and external dries. For the external one, you can use WD's DLG tool. It may be a good idea to run both short and extended tests.
For the internal drive, you can use some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
If there's anything wrong with any of the two drives, you need to back up your data.

Apart from all these, you can try to transfer just a single, big file. See if you will get better transfer speed.

Let me know how this goes,

I updated my drivers from the device manager, I am still getting the same transfer speeds.

The file I tried with was about 30gb of size. I usually copy the files from on hard drive to another, but I tested with transferring and it's the same thing.

I downloaded Crystal disk info, but I don't know what to do from there, this is what the app looks like:

Also, I am downloaded the WD Data Life guard Diagnostics and I will do the extended test tonight because it takes a lot of time (it passed the quick test), but I doubt that it will find anything since the hard drive is only 6 months old.

Note that I using my phones charger to transfer or copy the files (it's a Galaxy note 3 charger so it's a usb 3.0), so I don't know if that's the problem.

The reason I am posting this is because at some point, I remember having 100Mb/s transfer speeds, and now I find it weird that I am only getting 30-35Mb/s.

Any other suggestion?

EDIT: I changed cables and I am now averaging 60 MB/s. I think this is still a bit too slow.

Alright, so I noticed something. When I transfer files from my external hard drive to my HDD, it goes faster (around 70mb/s) for files under 50Gb and around 100Mb/s for files over 70Gb.

First, why do larger files seem to transfer more quickly?

Second, why am I getting higher speeds when going from External to internal?

EDIT:

So I changed to removal policy from Quick removal to better performance.

Results:

From HDD to external: I start at 170 MB/s and quickly goes down to 70Mb/s
From external to HDD: No noticeable difference.

I don't understand what's going on. The youtube video that I watched to put better performance for removal policy showed the guy getting 180Mb/s.

Any ideas?
