I just built a new pc and I'm planning to transfer alot of my old hdd data to my new hdd. I also have a ssd which is taking up the only other place for a drive. Though my motherboard has more sata connectors and my psu can power more drives. Would it be harmful to the old drive or data if I plugged it in outside of the case? Would I even be able to transfer files this way? Thanks

Solution
It would work assuming you plugged in all the right cables and the all the needed power. As for it being safe, do you have kids, cats, dogs, etc.? If they walk by and knock things over right in the middle of the transfer you might not be very happy. Assuming you are not doing something really dumb, make sure all your drives are placed on something stable, it should be just fine.

Sure you can do it that way. Shut down the PC. Connect one of the sata power cords form the PSU to the HDD and connect a sata data cable from the mobo to the HDD. The HDD doesn't have to by screwed down to the PC case. Power up and transfer the data. Power down and remove the HDD and extra cables. Voila!
