Is updating Internet Explorer necessary if it is not my main browser?

I never use Internet Explorer as my main browser. I use Google Chrome (and may move on to Firefox). My question concerns updates to Internet Explorer. I repeatedly receive reminders to update Internet Explorer through my Avast Update reminder. I have not downloaded updates in over a year, due to one update that gave me the blue screen of death, and I had to un-update. Now, I can't even remember how I fixed the blue screen of death, but rather than have it happen again I have just refused all Internet Explorer updates. So, is this a security risk for me? I have never understood whether Internet Explorer is just a browser, or whether somehow it powers my whole computer...hmmm.

Internet Explorer has its hooks into every facet of Windows. Whether you use it or not it behooves you to keep it updated.

Internet Explorer is also a component. Many other programs use bits and pieces of it.

All those programs will have security holes.
