[SOLVED] Is upgrading from the i5 6500 to the i5 9400f worth it?

Hello.

Recently, I got a GTX 1660 Super that replaced my R9 290. I thought it would greatly increase my FPS for the games I own. Although that happened in Call of Duty Warzone, games like Fallout 4 and Minecraft didn't get any performance boost that I can notice, so now I am on the search for a new CPU. I am wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from an i5 6500 to an i5 9400f. Just so you know, I have a compatible motherboard for the i5 9400f laying around.

yes it worth , the 9400f will be much better than the 6500
if your budget is enough i would suggest you for r5 3600 and b450 mobo , the much better value and performance

Yes, the i5 9400f would be a good upgrade. You get 2 more cores and 500mhz more max turbo.

I would suggest a ryzen 5 3600, but if you already have a 300 series intel board, the 9400f makes sense. Just make sure it has a compatable bios if its an older 300 series board

It might be worth it to stick with the i5 9400f if you already have the Coffee Lake motherboard ready to go...at least you don't have to buy a new one specifically for the new socket.

That said, going on other replies here, I'll second the Ryzen 5 3600 sentiment. The below TechSpot review bears out the performance gains the 3600 has over the 9400f:

Specifically, "The Ryzen 5 3600 destroys the Core i5-9400F in core-heavy games and applications. It currently costs 33% more, but it was often 50% faster in applications and provided roughly 30% gains in modern games". In addition, the i5 still has 6C/6T where the 3600 has 6C/12T.

Depends on what you're looking for in the end and what kind of cash you may be willing to throw at it all.

Well, yes, considering you already have a motherboard laying around, but I'd suggest saving up some more for the 9600KF.

But, if you can exchange the motherboard you have there for a AM4 B450 chipset, get the Ryzen 3600. Much better option for gaming.

Consider the fact that the Intel lacks hyperthreading, which is penalising in core intensive games AND given the fact that the next gen consoles will have Ryzen platforms, the games are likely to be optimised to make use of more threads, rather than performance per core.
