Is upgrading worth it?

Hi,

When i look in my computer, I can see a clear difference between my parts.

I'm studying to make video games, my "speciality" is making special effects. Making those effects where so hard for my GPU that it just kept overheat, so I changed it for a GTX-1060 and then my power supply wasn't strong enough so I bought a Evga superNova 850W Gold.

Now the thing is that the rest of my specs are :

AMD FX-4100 (4 core (one thread each) 3,6Ghz
8G Ram
motherboard : gygabite ga-78lmt s2

So as you can see, big difference with the new parts.

My computer makes everything I need since I changed the GPU, only thing is I need at least 16G Ram that's for sure.

Now I was wondering is it worth buying a new CPU, Motherboard and Ram, or should I just buy new Ram? I'm not really gaming a lot since school take all my time, but I do game. I'm thinking of buying AMD ryzen 1700 or intel i5 7600k, don't know if you have better options for me. It's the first time i'm thinking of upgrading my computer like this (in fact it will turns out as a new one) and I'm just not sure how big the difference will be since even with those old spec, my computer works fine. So will the upgrade worth the almost a 1 000$?

I might begin using Houdini if anyone knows it ^^

Thank you very much for your answers!

Upgrading from that CPU and motherboard would be a good idea. As for whether to go with Intel or AMD. That would be up to your preference.

Since you already have the gpu and psu, here are the rest parts to make completion (your old HDD will still be used in the new build as storage)

I just gave some clear estimation on what you going to spent. I think with i7 and samsung 960 evo, you will be surprise at how much time you will saved with these parts. I realized that Huodini do not require strong cpu, but why would you do halfway while its only $100 different with i5. Any time saved with better hardware is your life. You cannot get it back with any amount of money.

Ryzen is cool though, but can you wait until it was reviewed and tested?

Anyway, if you decide to stay with your old pc, consider buying an SSD and installed window and your work in it. It does not cost much but it will surely increase you overall performance.

$76 ADATA Ultimate SU800 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Good luck

PS: the ssd below and above is different class and speed. The samsung 960 evo might have 2x or more speed than ADATA. Your old motherboard cannot use the samsung 960 evo since it uses M.2 gen3 socket. ADATA itself is almost 3x HDD speed.

Ohh Gosh thank you for that build! wasn't expecting that!

yeah I was hesitating between i5 7600k and i7-7700k. Someone told me I was better to go with motherboard with a "Z" like the Tomohawk (but it's twice the price). Do you think it's worth it?

Sure I was waiting for the reviews 😛 As I understand right now, AMD ryzen is better as a workstation and Intel for gaming experience, but yeah I'm not in a hurry so I'll wait ^^
