Is using a used SSD okay?

My friend has a 120 gb ssd that i might use for my boot drive for my upcoming build. I didn't see why I should be spending money buying a new one when my friend just had one laying around. Is using a used ssd safe? I'm only skeptical because I will be using it as a boot drive and I don't want to spend more money on a new operating system if the ssd fails. Also, how would I wipe the ssd clean so that I could use it as a boot drive?

It's not in his computer anymore. He switched to a laptop about a year ago. how do i connect it to a laptop to do a diagnostic? is there some kind of usb adapter?

Better off doing that the the le you listed is not a good board for an 8 core fx.
