My MI tv can only detect 2.4Ghz wifi band, though my router also has 5Ghz band. I was wondering if supporting a band is hardware thing or software thing. If it's a software thing, then I may get support for 5Ghz band on my tv in future updates.
As others have stated it is hardware thing. It likely does not matter. For many people the 2.4g band is better because it has better coverage in most houses. The 5g band can be faster but your TV likely would not use more bandwidth. It is not like it is going to download some 100gbyte game. It just loads video data streams which is pretty slow compared to most wifi.
Hardware, but if you have an ethernet port on the tv (most do), you could use a 5ghz access point as a network bridge to get those 5Ghz speeds if you wanted. Or you could even wire it for the ultimate speeds.

My 5Ghz TV connection is flaky at less than 5 meters and through two walls. Sometimes have to switch it to 2.4Ghz when it gets strange, desktop sitting right next to it is happy to run at 5Ghz. I blame sunspots.
I've seen a huge difference between any type of wifi and a wired connection. Even though most television ports are limited to 100Mbps, because streaming is latency sensitive and wired latency is much, much better than wireless, you can immediately see the benefits--one of which is literally zero buffering.
A solid 5Ghz setup would provide similar improvements over 2.4Ghz.
