I have a Celeron 433 MHz with 384 MB ram running on win98SE .

I am thinking of switching to windows xp. Is this pc's hardware resources
adequate to run Windows XP? Anything to look out for when installing win xp
on this machine?

TIA

You need to consider *ALL* of your hardware when deciding to upgrade. your
machine is on the very low end of the scale as far a performance under WinXP
goees. Upping your RAM to 512 or 1GB (if your motherboard supports it)
would be a definite benefit for you. The Celeron, while capable of handling
basic functions such as web browsing, office apps, and email, will
definitely be a boat anchor as far as gaming, video and audio
streaming/conversion goes. As long as you don't raise your expectations too
high, and all of your hardware is compatible with WinXP, your machine will
run Windows XP. Just don't expect miracles from it. I would recommend a
retail FULL version of WindowsXP, that way you can transfer it to whatever
computer you decide to replace the current one with.

XP is more stable and the 433 Celeron is enough. But you
will want to turn off a lot of the extra graphics features
that XP uses (eye candy). The question is really revolves
around the rest of the system, does all the hardware support
XP? Is the hard drive big enough? You have plenty of RAM
with 384 MB, but more would help.
Are your software applications in need of updates to run
under XP?

Suggest you go to www.pcpitstop.com and run the XP Readiness
Test (link on sidebar free) or download the test that MS
includes on the CD with XP. You can find the link for this

Also, be sure to compare the cost and performance of a new
Dell (for example) against the cost of upgrading the old
machine. It might be easier and less expensive to buy a
second computer. You can network the old and new machine
and gain a lot.

Why W2K? It isn't any better than XP in any way and is
older and at the end of support.
