I ask this because I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 10 and Win7 is way faster in general.

My opinion is that Windows 10 is loaded with crap such as bloatware and apps that Windows 7 doesn't have.

On old hardware at least, is Windows 7 still the best alternative (especially on HDD's)?

My specs:

CPU:FX6300
MB: M5A78L-M LX V2
GPU: R7 240 2GB
2 HD's
PSU: Gamemax GP 650

when you fresh install win 7 or win 10, both will boot for about same long time,
once you start using it, after some time, win7 boot time will get longer, while on win10 it will remains mostly same
on win 7 you have to cleanup from time to time lots of things to have boot time like with fresh install,
on win 10 the only thing that will slow down bootime is when you have too many restore points

by boot time i mean looking at windows boot logo/animation

sidenote: win8 was way better than win7

OP

I use Windows 10 on an old Core 2 Quad Q9500 pc. It's similar in age to your FX 6300, and it works just fine. Can even do light gaming with it.

0:00 - 0:19 CPU-Z to show Q9500
1:33 - Street Fighter V - playable at 900p
4:55 - Xenon Racer - playable at 1080p.

the pc can still boot with Windows 7, have W7 in working condition on one of the drives.
but I'm using W10 since I don't really feel any difference.
