Is Windows 8 key in the bios

My granddaughter's hd crashed in her HP laptop. She has lost her Windows 8 cd too! I have fitted a new HD. I have been told the product key is the bios? If I get a copy of Windows 8 will it install ok....thanks in advance guys

Yes, the key is in the bios. You need to get a copy of the OEM Windows 8 version of the same type that she had though -- a retail Win 8 image will not work with the OEM key stored in the bios.
