Windows 7 is an upgrade for Vista because of it's sluggish UI and buggy. The UI is a bit the same except for some features. Windows 7 has Generic Drivers which does not requires installation of the drivers. Well, not most of them, only devices that are registered on the Microsoft Catalog. Windows 7 is more fast than Vista. Go for 7, Vista would likely be dead just like what happened to XP.

What is your real question?
Do you already have Vista and want to upgrade or is it a choice between one or the other?

I haven't had mayor problems with vista so it worked for me.My w8 is an upgraded vista and works great so if you want to upgrade is that the way to go imo.

7 uses the same core as vista
vista = NT6.0
7 = NT6.1
windows vista with service pack 2 is the same as windows 7 in performance and stability

Think of Vista as a beta with a view toward the real consumer release, Windows 7. I still have one computer that runs Vista. An old laptop that operates as a server to manage backups for my home and office. It does OK for what it does.
