My rig:
i5 8600k 4.2 GHz
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz

I don't upgrade my PC a lot and I was wondering if an RTX 2080 would be suitable for 1080p 144Hz gaming, and will this card last me in the long run or am I wasting my money?

Worth is something only YOU can determine.

Your i5-8600K is a very good gaming processor, more so if you will overclock.
90% of 8600K will oc to 4.9

It can run any graphics card you want very well.
I would think a RTX 2080 would be very appropriate.

You will want a very good 550w psu, more likely 650w

This assumes that the 2080 is a significant jump in capability over whatever graphics card you are now using.

Nothing lasts forever, your needs/wants might change over time.

I currently have a msi 970, i'm due an update.. i've read some posts on other threads and they've recommended the 1080ti instead.. but surely the RTX 2080 would be better in the long run due to new technology.

In the long run, anything you buy today will get replaced as your needs change.

Both cards are in the same performance category.
If the prices are comparable, buy the newer RTX2080.

Buy what you need now... now.


I suspect though that the GTX1080ti will be a better value.

I'm Looking for a GPU upgrade, i want to be able to run the latest and upcoming games on high/ultra no problem.. at 1080p 144hz... i've been looking at the MSI 2080 Duke, which is a bit pricey but has promising technology which might benefit me in the long run? i've read many threads and people have recommended not to bother with the 2080 and just get a 1080ti or even a 1080...

Would I be taking a risk buying the 2080? or will this be a good upgrade which will last me a good amount of years...

Should I consider waiting for the next generation of graphics cards?

To be honest a 1080Ti is overkill for 1080p gaming as is the 2080RTX, both cards are pretty similar in performance terms when it comes to non ray-tracing graphics workloads. However, the problem is that the global stock of 1080Ti's is almost depleted, you may have problems trying to locate a new one. a 2080 is a good bet. You haven't provided the complete model name for your PSU, I'd check to make sure it has suficient power connectors for whatever GPU you decide to go with.

In short an RTX 2080 or 1080Ti will definitely do the job very nicely, but given that you are talking about 1080p gaming it may also be worthwhile looking at a 2070 or 1070Ti too. Tomshardware has copious test results of games running on various GPU's at different resolutions throughout their GPU reviews, have a look around to see what presents the best value and performance for your needs!

Given that you expect to run future games at ultra and with a high refresh rate monitor, I think it would be worth it for you to buy something that might be more than you need rather than aim for something that does what you need now. A 2080 or 1080 Ti, whichever costs less. It's not that I think a 2070 or 1080 isn't enough, but I think as time goes by there's a greater chance you'll start to wish you had bought something faster.

As a separate issue, I wouldn't worry about the new technology. It's going to be awhile before A) the tech really gets used in games and B) that performance of that tech gets optimized. By the time that happens I think it's all but guaranteed you'll want a new card by then anyways.

I will second the recommendation to stay away from Turing cards. They run like garbage with RTX on. And very few games support RTX. Stick with a 1070ti, 1080 or 1080ti. On the AMD side, Vega 56 if you can find it around $400 and Vega 64 around $500.

Vega gets a bad rep, and performs MUCH better if undervolt overclocked. Same was true of R9 Fury.

I owned a MSI 1080 Duke that did 2012 core out of the box and was VERY quiet. That was a really good card. Solid PCB and VRM.
I currently own a Sapphire RX Vega 64 I got on sale for around $500. Also rock solid. Fans a little louder than the Duke, but it's also slightly faster now that I've tuned it properly. And only uses about 10w more power now.

I would not pay the Turing premium until AFTER ray tracing is mainstream. It's a total waste right now and likely will be for another 1-2 years.

GTX1070Ti for $350.
