[SOLVED] Is XMP overclocking ram worth it? Does it work?

Hey everyone. I’m looking at making a really cheap ryzen build for a friend, and I was noticing a trend where faster ram is much more expensive. Suppose I got him 8gb of 2666 MHz ram and overclocked it to 3000, would there be a difference? I’ve heard that doing it technically increases the speed but it doesn’t change anything performance wise in-game. Would going for a cheaper athlon processor and getting faster ram be a better alternative?

Memory rated for 2666 , more than likely won't OC to 3000.

2x8GB DDR4-3000 costs $70.
Buy the 2 sticks of the speed RAM that meets your target. RAM is binned pretty heavily into all the speed categories, so there's no guarantee that you'll do significantly better than the speed that's advertised on the kit you buy.
