I created a VHD for windows and now everything is downloading into the c drive which only has 34 GB so how do I make everything install onto drive D.

Solution
Most Windows applications wool let you do a custom installation, and direct the fires to other drive / folder. On Windows 10, you can choose detail place in Settings | Storage

1. Why A VHD for your OS?

2. 34GB is too small for anything Win 7 or later, VHD or bare metal on a drive.

3. Read this for possibly how to redirect things:
Win 7 & 8: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1834397/ssd-redirecting-static-files.html
Win 8.1 & 10: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2024314/windows-redirecting-folders-drives.html

I hope those links don't teach you to mess with the registry, because things get messed up and even if you reverse it, some things stay messed up. I've tried changing the default install directory through the registry and some programs still ended up on the Windows-given location.

No, those are specifically NOT registry foolishness, on purpose.
Location redirection, built right into the Windows File Explorer GUI.
Right click, Properties, Location...
