Hello, my ISP provided me with a DLink Dir-866L router which has a custom firmware..very restrictive and lacks many functions available on universal firmware....Is it at all possible to upgrade to a universal DLink firmware? I'm worried that I would brick the router...PS. my internet connection is via PPPoE..thanks

Is there no "Update Firmware" option in the router's configuration utility?

That's the only way to apply firmware updates to it as far as I know, so if if there is no such option you're screwed anyway.

Only way around that is to buy your own retail router which should have comprehensive configuration options (you can't beat a Billion router in that respect however, if funds will allow).

Yes there is firmware update option. The thing is that the dlink universal firmware and web interface look totally different from my Isp one with more options and tweaks. Would this still be considered an update?

I would first read the fine print in your contract with the ISP, then I would call their support to see whether firmware upgrade is possible. If they've put their custom firmware, it's quite possible that their service will work with that firmware only.

OTOH - this is $150 router. If you pay $10/mo to lease it - make the math, and buy your own, as @Phillip suggested.
