Hello,

I've been having this issue for a long time now but can't find a solution so far. Even Nvidia support can't help.
Basically i have a Nvidia GTX690 card and i want to connect 4 monitors. With 3 monitors it works perfectly fine but as soon as i enable the 4th monitor the pc starts to freeze randomly (after few minutes or hours) or I get BSOD.

I found a way of systematically triggerging the BSOD, basically I open mozilla browser and move it to the 4th monitor via shortcut shift+windows+arrow.

The 3 monitors that work are 2 Asus (via DVI) and 1 LG TV (via HDMI displayport cable). My 4th monitor was an old Sharp TV but today i got a new asus monitor (via HDMI DVI cable) and still the problem happens. I thought the Sharp TV was the problem because it didn't support resolution 1920x1080.

I tried adding a second GTX 690 (no SLI bridge) and connected the 4th monitor on it. I tested the 4th monitor standalane on the new GPU and i can play games use mozilla no issues.

With 2 GTX 690 cards i put 3 monitors on my initial 690 card and 4th monitor on second 690 card. The issue is still there, i still can trigger the BSOD by moving the browser via shortcut shift+windows+arrow.

I tried lowering resolution, performing clear driver install via DDU etc to no avail. If anyone have a lead please let me know?

PS: I have a 850W Power supply.

Below i paste BSOD crash dump, which does point to nvlddmkm.sys

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a portion of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT
Arg2: ffff8a014774c090
Arg3: ffffda02afca8ff0

In multi gpu mode(SLI) the display outputs on the 2nd 690 will be disabled, disable multi gpu and try that.
I don't have an SLI bridge on the cards. However even if i disable Multi GPU the problem still persists. It's weird that if i slide mozilla window to the fourth screen instead using shortcut shift+windows+arrow it works. However with one card the PC freezes after a while. I'm yet to experience a PC freeze with two cards though, i only get BSOD.

SLI does not require a bridge to be activated, it just helps it perform properly. LIkely a software/OS issue. I'd grab a cheap $20-30 SSD or use a spare drive if available, disconnect the other drive(s) in the system and do a clean install of win 10(use the latest install version from microsoft) and see if 4 monitors work properly on the new install.

Yes i did this back in March, I had the issue already when i was on windows 7, then on March i decided to do a new clean windows 10 install. I downloaded the installer from microsoft i hope it was their latest :) this is really a mistery that i cannot solve for months. The thing is i need the fourth screen becasue i'm working from home now.

does it only happen when you use Shift+Windows+arrow keys? Can you drag the window to the 4th monitor without it BSOD
yes it seems to only happen when using Shift+Windows+arrow keys. Dragging the wondow to the fourth monitor works fine no BSOD, however when i use one 690 card with 4 monitors the PC freezes randomly after few minutes, rarely it freezes after few hours. I only installed a second gtx 690 today and connected fourth monitor on it. I don't have PC freezes yet, hoping for the best.

can you give full system specs including make and model of PSU

thanks for your help. Below i pasted the full spec when i purchased my PC. No change except today i added a second GTX 690 to the mix. I hoped running the fourth screen out of second GPU card will solve the issue.

BTW i do have a power meter, and i do not see any spike when the BSOD happens. power consumption is fairly stable between 300-400W when browsing.

Sorry but im going to throw a bunch of have you tired this at you.

Tried each 690 at a time?
Moved monitors to different ports?
Tried different cables?
using 2 different cables from the PSU to power the card?
Moved the card to a different PCI-e slot?
Rolled back the drivers to an older version?

this looks like more of a driver issue, given how old the card is, it's not gonna get fixed. most likely this means upgrading to a new GPU. What's off putting is the fact that these new generation cards will means new CPU which mean new MOBO..

Since your mobo has UEFI BIOS, you can install whatever new GPU you wish. Yes, you will not be fully utilising it due to your CPU , but it can always be transfered to a new build/platform upgrade afterwards.

What are you doing with the computer? Your i7 3820 is roughly on par with a E3-1275 v2 and it runs a GTX 980. Im not sure how much the E3 gets taxed as my Nephew plays Lego Batman on it, while my sister in law plays Rust, and Dirt 4. That computer was running a 780Ti, which is now in my work computer and runs 4 dell 23" monitors which does not have the issue yours does with the key combo shortcut. You can pick one up as cheap as $60 (if your lucky) up to about $150

Work, gaming (old titles for now) and streaming. Yes I could do with a relatively old GPU but I plan to play new titles soon.

What is weird is the combo shortcut is a problem only for sreen number 4 the other screens work fine. I thought the only thing untested is the cable given that i tried two different monitors as my 4th screen. So i got a new DVI cable.. and still the same problem, what a mistery really.

Anyway thank you all for your help.

Hey-o:
I Have the exact same issue, But an NVIDIA 1080.
Thought I had the Same PSU, But I Have EVGA 850W 80PLUS GOLD GQ MODULAR POWER SUPPLY . (My old box must have had the Corsair). I am curious if it's something to do w/modular voltage or just voltage in general to the video card... Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone, 3 monitors works fine.. 4th makes her not load - no bios, just stay black 4 times out of 5..... Pull the 4th monitor and up she pops.... and occasional crashes when gaming on one monitor w/4 on.

Here is my build In case you see something that matches....
If you find anything plz. let us know!

Thanks.
