So, i`ve managed to build my computer today, but there is a small issue. i connected everything to the powersupply, and when i turn the switch one my motherboard (Asus maximus 8 hero) lights up all and good indicating that proper power is being delivered to the components. When i power on the system though, lights and fans turn on for a split second, and then everything shuts down. I unplugged my corsair h110i gtx from the 3 pin and sata power and tried to boot up. It worked and i got into the bios, My cpu, ram and hard drive and ssd are recognized by the bios and i get this: CPU_FAN Error. I shutted down the pc immidiatelly because cpu temps rised up to 89 degrees. Is my PSU faulty? My PSU is an XFX XTR SERIES 650W and one thing i noticed when i got it out of the box was that it smelled funny.. I assumed it was from the foam or that black wrap it had around it.. What should i do? Please help 🙁

P.S: i dont have my graphics card plugged in yet.

Solution

Hi. No, i wouldn't think so. If I had to guess I would say that it had to do with your cooler. Maybe not plugged into the proper header or something in that area. Recheck the way you have the wiring for that thing. I have an H80i GT that I couldn't use because of my case. Your Motherboard should have the CPU Fan Header as well as an Auxillary Header. You have a good PSU and it should be enough, although you didn't say waht you were running except the cooler.

i have an I7 6700K 16gb corsair vengeance lpx memory, 1TB WD caviar blue and a hyperX savage SSD

CPU_FAN Error indicates that your CPU is overheating.

Here's a few places to start checking:

- Did you have a successful installation of your CPU heatsink?
- Have you plugged in the cpu heat-sink fan into the correct place on the motherboard?
- Did you apply thermal paste? (Are you sure you applied enough/ not too much?)

Yes, it has been seated properly and it had thermal paste pre-applied on it. I have the 3 pin connector on the CPU_FAN header on the motherboard and also the sata power cable on. The cooler also lights up when i`m trying to power the system on for a split second and then closes on its own, no beep or anything..

That should be fine. I am running the 6700k as well. I went back to Air Cooling and just checked my temps. 17C to 19C across the cores with a package temp of 21C. Not OC'd at the moment. As I said, I suspect it was with the wiring.

Could i have killed anything by not plugging the cooler on? It was for a few minutes and the cpu was fine until i got a warning that CPU was reaching dangerous temperatures and i shut it off and left it like that.. I hope not 🙁

Actually, once that CPU reaches a certain temp, it wil shut down to save the CPU by itself. You shut it down when you got the warning. The CPU Header ( fan and Water cooling ) is 4 pin and at the top of the board above the CPU socket. That is a little different than the H80i GT that I have and couldn't mount the radiator because of the case configuration. You have a line that comes off the pump and goes to the CPU Fan Header on the Motherboard. The fans at the radiator, plug into the pump. Again, it sounds like you had something plugged into the wrong place and when you removed it, it started up.

My mother board has 3 places you can install the fan header. Water pump, cpu opt and cpu fan. I installed the 3-pin connector coming out of the block into the water pump header and cpu fan, but the result was the same. It powers on for a split second then shuts down.. When i remove the 3 pin header and sata for power, the system posts normally, but with of course the cpu_fan error because the cooler is not plugged in. I called a technician friend of mine and he told me that its probably the power supply.. I`m planning to get a G1 980ti in there and he told me that for that card i should get a 1000W power supply to be comfortable.. I think i`m just going to get my pc to a technician to take a look at it and hopefully he can make it work.. I`m just so sad and dissapointed my first build ever didnt work out well 🙁

I am Running a GTX 980 and have a Corsair AX 850w PSU and that is overkill. If you start looking at sli with 980Ti's,, then you could justify a 1000w PSU. It is possible that it could be the PSU, but it sounds like the connections are good, so it could very well be the Pump / cooler that is the culprit. If you have an air cooler that you can install, try it and see what happens.

Solution

i dont have one unfortunatelly.. and i dont want to go through the hassle of removing the AIO and re-applying thermal paste( Which is something i dont have either..) so idk what i should do.. maybe unplug the PSU and plug all the cables back in? its a modular power supply so i might have putted something wrong or something..I`ll do that tomorrow..

But thank you so much for your help! I kinda feel better now and i will tackle the matter again when i have time! Cheers! :)

Well, the reason I suggested that was to rule out things. If it worked with an air cooler, then you can pretty much figure it was the Liquid Cooler. Don't get frustrated. As I said it is a good PSU you have and I suspect it most likely is the cooler from what has been said. You could try and get an RMA and send it back for another one.
