I feel really sheepish but this is what happened today:
I wanted to buy a used Mediasonic ProBox today.
The advertiser said it was in perfect condition, and could be used with 4tbs drives up to 4 drives.

I brought a 2tb and a 3tb to test it our with.
It worked fine with the 2tb but whenever I inserted the 3 tb it asked me to format...
After inspecting the box, I noticed the seller had put a sticker over the part of the box that advertises capacity of each drive. I quickly peeled it off noticing it was only supporting 2tb hdds. Well at least it said: 8tb max 4 x 2tbs.

Now believe it or not, I actually still bought the thing (at a much lower price, and after admonishing the seller) because I do have a bunch of 2tb hdds to plug in.... But still, my 3tb is not doing so well right now.

In fact I have it plugged into my Linux laptop and am copying it off as we speak...
Now this drive was already not doing so well... was overheated the other day, and not working properly for about half an hour till it cooled off. But after that was working fine...

I want to know how pissed off I should be at the seller? Could plugging it into the Mediasonic have damaged it somehow? Or was it just the fact of having removed it from the original enclosure etc, even though I was very careful, might still have caused a bad effect on an old drive. TY

Thanks for your quick response, however from what I can suss, there are different editions of the Probox HF2-SU3S2.
With the linked one being fine for drives up to 12tb each. Mine clearly states 2tb max. And I read in a different thread there are reasons why a an enclosure would not be able to handle drives larger than it was intended for....

Correction: it says 8tb, 4x2tb. But it can be reasoned then that 2tb would be the max per drive...unless i'm mistaken.

If yours specifically states 2TB max, well...that's what it is.
Putting a larger drive in will probably prompt you to reformat to a size it can handle. Resulting in loss of any data on it during that process.
