Issue with RAM speed?

I have just built my first computer. When I go into the BIOS it shows that my memory is only running at 1333. I have the Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0 mobo and G skillz trident gtx 1866 16gb ram. Was just wondering why its showing it as only 1333? I am new to this site and was hoping for any suggestions/insight

You are running at the motherboard default speed.
Your bios should have a option to select a XMP setting of 1866 for your ram.
If that option is not there, you have to set the speed and perhaps voltage to get your 1866 speed.

Thanks for your input. I will have to mess around with it I suppose. I was just afraid I had bought RAM that wasn't compatible with my mobo. If I do change those settings.. is that considered overclocking?will that make my rig run hotter? Sorry I am just getting into all of this.

1866 ram is actually 1333 ram that is certified to run at 1866, usually with a higher voltage of 1.6 or 1.65.
Technically, that is overclocking.
Most refer to overclocking as raising the cpu voltage to make it go faster.

Couple of things play into this question, first what CPU? While it's all well and good the mobo can support 1866, the real question is can the MC (memory controller) handle 1866, with AMD generally 1866 is not a problem for the higher tier 8xxx XPUs and many of the 6xxx CPUs under that it can be very problematic. The FX Cpus are rated UP TO 1866 at 1 stick per channel (2 total)...AT 1866 or above it may also require additional voltage to the CRAM and/or MC (normally the CPU/NB voltage) and can also require timing adjustments (which may be the case here as the Tridents are high performance, running with a CL of 8 opposed to the normal 9 at 1866). If you have a 8320, 8350 or 8370, would say chances are good, give them a try, if problems, give me a shout and we can make some adjustments 😉

Ok i will need to go in the BIOS and tweak a few things? I have the amd fx 9370

With that CPU, should be (hopefully) nothing more than find the memory OC profiling they use in the BIOS might be XMP, DOCP, EOCP or AMP and enable it and set to 1866
