Issues after upgrade

So the other day I ordered a i7 7700k, previously had an I5 6600k. There both compatible with my Z170A Pro Gaming Carbon. They also are both 1151 Socket. So I put my new processor in and then put my 212 Evo back on and when trying to boot my computer it cuts on for a second all lights and fans cut on and then cuts right off, and unless I unplug it from the wall or switch it off it just keeps trying to boot over and over again. Okay so I figured mhhm..., maybe I got unlucky and got a bad processor so I then put my old processor back in followed all steps as usuall, and now my computer is still doing the same thing even after I've already used this I5 6600k in my computer for 7 months and had no issues. I have a little over 1000 W Power supply, so I know that's not the issues, I have 2 8GB sticks of RAM, I've tried moving them taking them out doesn't do anything. I also have a GTX 1070 FTW edition. And I am not very sure at all what is going on but was wondering if anyone could help me out!

did oyu updated bios on the mainboard? the mainboard is for 6th gen cpu,s without th bios update the 7th gen will not work

update bios with the i5, then turn off mainboard, remove i5 and put i7, enjoy your new cpu

When you plugged in the CPU have you damaged any off the chips on the motherboard where you place the CPU because if they both compatible with your MB and everything is connected correctly then dont know why its not working for you

2 days ago i plugged my CPU and i damaged the chips in MB and when plugged it all in and turned it on comp gose off right away and had to buy a new MB

I think atljsf's solution may work because you need a new BIOS in order to use a Kaby Lake CPU on a Z170 motherboard. You'll need to put your Skylake 6600k back in (or whatever CPU you can POST with), flash the BIOS to a new one, and then replace the 6600k with the 7700k.

if no pin got damaged, then reinstall the i5, put the heatsink again, put the fan in the cpu fan connector, reconnect psu if you unplugged it and put the gpu back or work without it while you update

remember that any bios update must be done working with a ups, if power goes out when updating bios, mainboard dies and you will need another one

go to the mainboard manufacturer, downoad the bios, copy it to a usb stick formated as fat 32 and go into bios to update

Put the old cpu back in. Do bios reset by taking out the battery on the motherboard for 10 seconds. They put that battery back in and see if the computer will fire up with that old cpu. Assuming that it does then update to the latest bios That would be ami bios version 1.7. MAKE SURE THE POWER IS UNPLUGGED WHILE YOU DO THIS

Just because a bios may be bricked does not mean the motherboard is history. It is possible to buy a new bios chip. They are plug and play. for example:

I replaced a bios chip on an Asus Sabertooth board and on gigabyte board for some college kids in the town I live. As I said they are plug and play.

not every single bios chip is like that and those chips are expensive, sometimes costs half of the mainboard and you have to be lucky to find them, simpler to replace the mainboard and use a ups than promise a new bios chip that might or might not exist

Dude, 17 dollars and maybe shipping is a lot less expensive spending 169 dollars on a new motherboard. Not sure what your arguing about here. But good luck going nowhere.

The point is his is. And if the bios is bricked(I hope not) this would be much cheaper then buying a new motherboard.
Oh ya... got the Asus bio chip from Asus. I got the Gigabyte. bios chip from a vendor on ebay some guy down in Florida that does this for a living. As many people do. Both worked just fine with the latest bios installed from them.

the bios is not bricked, i gave steps to not to brick a bios

the chip you mention might cost what you say on some markets, but not in the entire world is available at those prices and not every mainboard costs 169 dollars, most mainboard cost 80 or less dollars, don't complain about one single mainboard on a hipotethical situation, read the post

we are trying to help a person who has not updated bios and his old cpu now refuses to boot

now, good luck for you, going that special place where you buy those chips no one asked

If you look at my first post to him. I also told him he should reset his bios by pulling the battery. Something you forgot to mention. I also told him what bios to use. In fact i sent him to the exact page to find it. Something else you did not do.

My reasoning behind mentioning that a bios chip can be replaced was because you decided to say if the bios is bricked you need a new motherboard. That was not true. It's ok man. you can't always be accurate.

i didn't sent him to any bios page because this is a forum you try to help, you are not supposed to do everything for the person who asks for help

if he doesn't find the bios version, he can ask us for hep but if he is doing his own effort and i admire people who does that, even when they don't know every detail of the process

in this case we need to make the board to work again, later find the bios version required form the right site knowing the mainboard model and finally making work the new cpu

if you join steps and you are in a hurry or stressed because something doesn't work, usually the results is a big disappointment and damaged parts, patience on each step is required, always

I see you have helped a lot of people here. That is very nice. I am however tired of this back and forth. Bottom line is you gave incomplete information on how to get it running again. The first thing you should have said was unplug your computer. The second thing was you did not tell him to remove the battery and reset the current bios.

I will acknowledge though that your initial finding of needing a bios update is correct and if putting the new cpu on had not put the current bios in a loop, it would have been a much simpler fix.

i don't understand why you are qualifying my atempts to help someone here, especially when i just fund that you complained about something never happened, trolling like this just destroys the post and makes the op not to want to comeback and reply, makes everything look bad

in no place no one declares to know everything, if you know everything why do you come to a forum? to just annoy people?

i came here asking for help and tried to help others too, if you are going to qualify the amount of knowledge and capacity of analyze and solve problems of other forum members, you are not helping, at all

now, if you know how to fix the op problem, please, do it, and don't stop complaining about my capabilities or lack of them, while at it, buy some bios chips no one asked, that was golden!
