I've tried many methods and nothing seems to work at all. I'm using a Samsung 850 EVO with a generic usb 3.0 to sata connector. The computer detects the ssd just fine, however, the Samsung Data Migration Tool will not detect it. Not only that, but it will not let me select the drive location, being stuck on D: drive (which is a Lenovo partition)

Even swapping the drive letter in Disk Management doesn't help it, it is firmly stuck on the Lenovo D: drive (and whatever I change it to) I've installed the latest software and everything, it will simply just not work for me.

If it matters, computer is a Lenovo Y40, no disc drive either.

Solution
We can assume your WD source HDD boots without incident and is totally functional, yes? In other words the source drive is problem-free, right?

It could be the SATA to USB adapter at the root of the problem. We've run into so many defective adapters (both USB 2.0 & USB 3.0) that were either totally defective or erratic in operation (sometimes they'd work - other times not) that we've given up on them.

I don't suppose you have a USB external enclosure available to mount the Samsung, right?

You could try another disk-cloning program such as the Macrium Reflex Free one although I have to admit that we've found the Samsung disk-cloning program quite effective & reliable the few times we used it. Anyway if you want to try the Macrium...

Seems to work OK the few times we've tried it.

But I wish you could get your hands on a USB 3.0 external enclosure.

Solution
It appears it was just the Samsung software. I used the Macrium software and it worked perfectly fine. The Samsung Magician is also able to detect it.

Thanks.
