My computer was not turning on from the power button intermittently. I would have to unplug it up to 8x to get it to come on. Updated BIOS. Checked all ram. Replaced PSU and case but still an issue! Then I plugged my headset into the wrong jacks- mic into headphones, headphones into mic (in the new case) and it shut down and will not power back on. Light on mobo is on but no response elsewhere. Tried bread boarding to see if new case was shorting it somewhere but still no go. Mobo was purchased in Nov 2014 new. Any ideas?

Intel I7 cpu
Intel DX58SO LGA 1366 Intel X58 mobo
Thermaltake 850W psu
6GB Corsair ram
SAPPHIRE 100296HDMI Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-Bit DDR3 graphics card

Solution

I would say it is a mobo failure.
I went by the manual of both the case and the motherboard. I just thought it was strange that when I plugged the headset into the front panel it shut off immediately and won't come back on at all.

It doesn't come on at all now. No fans spinning, no jerks trying, nothing! It was working fine until I plugged in the headset to to front panel. It didn't just shut down like normal, it was like pulling the plug out.

Yes it should be supplying power. It does sound more like a mobo failure if it is getting power. It could be a bridge issue (southbridge).

Yeah I went to go check the PSU using paperclip method but all my wires are black on it LOL--I have been having a lot of issues to begin with before this headphone jack ordeal. The whole reason I got a new PSU and case was because of the issues with it not wanting to power on until I unplugged the power supply. Sometimes it would just start first try but other times I had to unplug up to 8 times and plug back in to get it to power on from the case ON button.

I would say it is a mobo failure.

Solution
If it quit the moment you plugged into the front panel, I'd suspect a short there. Try unplugging everything going to the front panel from the motherboard then briefly touch the Power Switch header pins together with a conductive object like a key to turn it on. If it starts, try putting back the cables to isolate the problem; if not, I'd guess motherboard next.

Tried it. Nothing happened.

I did the EXACT same thing last night. Plugged my headset in and BOOM!! My PC died same as yours, green light is on but it won't power up at all.
Man I've covered everything.
Did u figure it out?

Nope! I tried bread boarding with known working parts and no go. Had to buy a whole new computer because it was my work computer! Pretty frustrating, that whole ordeal. I hope you can figure yours out!!!!

As matter of fact, today I sat down and took the time to do a complete walk thru. I did find the issue only 15 minutes into my inspection.
The case plug labeled "HD Audio" was plugged into the HD Audio header on the MB just as it should be. Well obviously, the HD Audio and front audio are different....duh!
I burnt out a lane from the HD Audio header up about 3/4 of an inch to the HD LED just to the left and slightly above the HD Audio header. I soldered a piece of wire to reconnect the 2, it worked for about half an hour then died again. After inspecting the known issue, I found it was still intact. I'm assuming that the damage went further than this lane. The audio chip was quite hot to the touch and that leads me to believe that the damage is far greater than I can repair in my bedroom floor.
This is a perfect example of a 14 year IT veteran and system builder became complacent and was in a a hurry and made a rookie mistake, and the weird labeled case plugs sure didn't help either.

Anyways its a total motherboard loss. I did find an Asus x58 replacement board locally on craigslist. $150 and includes 985 cpu and 6gb dominator ram. He agreed to sell me just the board for only $85. I'm picking it up Monday (payday).
Thanks for your feedback.
