I have taken note that Java recently hasn't liked having both the 32 and 64 bit versions installed. On both my desktop and laptop when I try to update Java with both versions installed, it will update one of the versions but not the other, forcing me to manually update the other. Does anyone know why this happens, since I've never had it happen before till update 381 came out.

Because you don't need to have both 32bit and 64bit versions of Java installed on the same machine. You only need the version that machines whichever version of Windows you're running (x86 or x64). They used to allow the dual installation for step-back purposes but have since abandoned it due to x86 slowly becoming a thing of the past.

But why only now has it began to be a problem? It worked just fine a month ago.

And when was this discontinued?
Honestly you would have to ask Java that question but don't expect an answer. It's the same way with other things that get slowly sunsetted (phased out) for no reason. They may have decided to do it due to redundancy.
