Issues with overclocking in BIOS

I have a few issues with overclocking my PC using the BIOS on my motherboard, generally the problem is that my PC struggles to get 144+ framerates on all low settings in certain games, and when I use the "EZ Tuning/Overclock" feature in my BIOS, it instantly boosts my framerates 2x or more, but then my games tend to crash after a few minutes, or my entire PC freezes.

What am I doing wrong? attaching pictures of my BIOS settings and my specs:

i7-7700k, asus z270 motherboard, gtx 1070 gpu, two sticks of DDR4-3000 ram

Auto tuning OC profiles do not guarantee stability. Probably you will have to increase the Vcore to make it stable. I always prefer manual overclock rather than auto. That way you get to learn the settings that give you stability. Before increasing the V core i suggest you have some study about overclocking. You must not go past certain voltages for each processor and you should always keep a live monitoring of temperatures. Also not all psus are able to handle overclocking. You should have a decent unit for this
Edit: As you see the auto OC profile, enables XMP for your ram as well. You may try to set those XMP timings manually without enabling the xmp. Like i said, doing it step by step manually will show you where the culprit is

Where can I learn more about this? Is it motherboard-specific? Or do I download a program like MSI Afterburner and do it through there? I appreciate your answer! I want to be able to overclock my CPU and turn XMP on without it crashing my PC

Also is there a simpler way to get better performance out of it? I would be fine with just using the BIOS overclock, and I did for a long time, but it started crashing like this recently and I can't use BIOS for it anymore.

The 1 click overclock in easy tune is not stable. This is why your system is crashing. Your temps are probably really high too because it will pump more voltage than necessary.

Overclocking the 7700k is really easy though. My rule of thumb is keep the v-core below 1.35 volts and average CPU load temps below 80C. I would reset your bios to factory defaults. Then change your frequency multiplier to 48. This will give it a 4.8ghz clock speed. Then I would change your v-core to 1.3 volts and boot the system.

Download HW info and run a Cinebench R15. If your PC crashes, go back into bios and move the volts to 1.31. If it is stable, watch the temps. Make sure your average CPU temps under load are below 80C (going above is okay, but for long term use high temps can damage a CPU). If your temps are find and your system does not crash after running Cinebench, then go back into the bios and change your multiplier to 49. Keep going till you hit 1.35 volts or your temps go high.

I hit 5ghz with my 7700k at 1.33 volts.

This is very helpful, thank you! I'll do this tonight. Also, is there any chance my CPU is damaged? I ran with the BIOS setup for a long time and eventually it started bluescreening on me, is that a bad sign?

I’m sure your chip is fine. They have a lot of fail safes built in so you don’t damage the CPU.
