recently i upgraded my pc, i bought an i5 4690k that i have overclocked to 4.4ghz and an msi z97s sli krait edition motherboard to support the cpu, the issue i am having at the moment is that after a while, when i begin playing a game where i was getting 60 fps+ on highest settings but my performance tanks down to around 37 fps in dying light and 27 in crysis 3, this is really frustrating and can be fixed temporarily by a reboot and a quick look through the bios, i have overclocked my processor and have increased voltages accordingly, i get aroud 55oc when gaming and 60-70oc when stress testing, is there something limiting the processor in any way that i can deactivate, i have not checked through cpu features and the only thing i have disabled is a thermals limit and and c1e state, could somebody please help me out as it is very frustrating to deal with :D

Solution
Did you re-install the operating system or is this a dirty upgrade? If you're using the same operating system as you did with your old parts there's a good choice that could be causing issues, especially if you didn't uninstall any of your old drivers.

Second, did you test system stability before Overclocking? If you didn't we really cannot troubleshoot anything because we don't even know if the parts you have are defective or not. I'm not talking about a stability test either. I'm saying run the system for a couple of weeks at stock.

this did happen on my old parts (significantly less) , i am using windows 10 and i had to go back to win 8 and then get win 10 again so it would work without having to pay for it, i am pretty sure the parts are not defective, also with the hyper 212 evo and a 4.4 ghz overclock, is it normal to get anywhere from 40oc to 50oc cpu temps while playing crysis 3? or is this an issue that is caused by something, as i am pretty sure the cpu is not throttling and i have also recently disabled any form of power saving on the board to keep the performance maintained!

The temperatures you are seeing a pretty good. You only need to start worrying when they get above 69c.

If this is an issue that was present on your old machine then it's likely that your operating system is causing issues. If you already have windows 10 installed on the machine, you're key should already be linked to your new motherboard and can be re-installed without too much hassle.

when i was using the old system with windows 8.1 it was also an occasional problem, the OS could be the issue though!

If the issue persists on two different sets of hardware, it does make it very likely.

so could the cpu be a little defective?

could it be a memory issue of some sorts? what are the most likely things to cause this?

The issue you are seeing is not something you usually see stem from memory issues. You could always run MemTest to make sure though.

I'm reading through your OP and I'm not seeing if you upgraded your RAM when you got your new parts. Did you or are you using the same as you did with the last processor?

i did not do anything to the ram and do not suspect a voltage leak anymore, should i just bump up the voltage and down the clockspeed
i have it at 4.2 ghz and 1.14 but should i increase the voltage and see if that helps in anyway.

i store some games on an ssd in my system (games like hotline miami and some other games that i really like) but most of the games i play are on a 1tb hdd that has been reliable for the past few years, i have another hdd in the system as well that i also use for games and i also use for storing things that i do not really use that often, it is 1 tb as well, i have checked for any form of fragmentation and it seems to be clear but if there are any other issues i should be aware of then i would be grateful for any information, i will try to run it at stock later but for now i have bumped the clockspeed up, when i had the issue with the old hardware i did this and it worked, if it happens again i will revert to stock for a few days and then if all is good then i shall re-attempt the overclock :)

also when i boot the pc, before going into windows it displays a little A2 in the bottom right corner of the screen, could this relate to the issue, also i reverted to stock speeds on the processor.

The A2 you see in the corner is a code that represents what the bios is currently checking. Your manual might have information on what the code means but I'm guessing that A2 means that it's check is complete and everything is ready to go.

The A2 maybe something to do with SATA connections and how the bios has configured drives.

also could this be related to the fact that i did not update the bios when i got the board and it has been running the bios it shipped with for a while and the fact that i had no chipset drivers because i installed a newer bios and chipset drivers and have been playing around with the voltages could this have been the issue, cause it did happen again but i have changed the voltage to 1.210 to try and resolve it.

Plalying around with voltages can cause this issue and so can chipset drivers. Check your system event log to see if any errors are poping up. In addition, Monitor your system's temperature and voltages during gaming. It could be thermal throttling or wack voltage.

turns out its an issue with the nvidia drivers where id you overclock the gpu it can cause issues, thanks for your time though this info is very helpful and could help somebody having issues so i may as well say you solved it, as a thankyou for your time :)
