Question Issues with reaching 144fps @ 1440p 144hz

Recenetly I upgraded my GPU as I planned on upgrading my monitors from 1080p 60hz to 1440p 144hz. I went with a RTX 2060 as I read that it's capable of running 1440p 144hz on medium settings in most games. After getting the new GPU and monitors, I noticed that I can't reach 144fps to take advantage of my 144hz monitor. I tried fortnite as a test, on medium settings (except render distance) at 1440p 144hz I was getting random fps jumps between 50fps and 100fps, sometimes it drops to 30 for a second and back to 50-100, from time to time it will jump up to 120 but never further than that and it will never level out. I did notice that the GPU is running around 50%-70% useage while my CPU is pinned at 100% which I never had this issue before, my CPU is a i5 9600k, could this be the issue? I have the ability to overclock it but no idea if it will help since my cpu is pinned at 100%, I never overclocked it because I never had the need to. My temps are normal (50C GPU 50-60C CPU and CPU is turboing correctly) My specs:

CPU: i5 9600k (not oc'ed)
GPU: Zotac RTX 2060 OC
MOBO: Asus Prime z390-A
RAM: 2x16GB DDR4 HyperX Fury 3200Mhz
PSU: Corsair RM1000x
Storage: 2x1TB Crucial M.2 SSDs

What’s your cpu usage when just at Windows desktop? Sounds like something might be hogging some cpu resources.

Also don’t expect too much from a 2060 at 1440p. I’m running a 2080 Super at 1440p and in newer AAA games I run a mixture of medium to high settings to be able to average 120+ FPS.

Thanks for the reply. On desktop idle with only Google Chrome opened and handful of background processes (MSi Afterburner, Discord, ICUE ect) my cpu useage is around 10%.

I'm aware that the 2060 is nothing special, I just wanted the lowest tier card that is somewhere near of being able to handle 1440p 144hz, I plan on upgrading to 2080Ti or 2080 Super when next gen/next series cards come out so I can get the 2080 at lower price.

I don't think its worth upgrade from 2060 to 2080ti, maybe just hold i mean just wait for 3060 or 3070 it will be better.

It strikes me as unlikely that the person is still waiting around for an answer a full year later.
