Issues with WD Mybooks

I have a custom built machine that I built in 2009. It's a Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard. Having issues with external drive connections.

Some background: My previous HD was a WD Caviar Blue, 500 GB. I used 3 external drives on it: An old WD Mybook, 300 GB, for music. A newer, Mybook 3.0 1TB, for movies. And a 1TB WD passport used to move files between my computer and my WD LiveTV. As you can see, I like WD.

I started having startup issues with the Caviar. Windows took forever to load, sometimes not loading after an hour, just sitting on the splash screen. I assumed the HD was going bad after 5 years. Before it 'died', it stopped recognizing my 300 GB WD mybook. It was still recognizing the 1TB Mybook, and when I plugged in the passport, it would not recognize it. The 300 GB appeared as a drive, but everytime I went to open it, Windows Explorer stopped responding.

So I bought a brand new, 500GB WD Velociprator. I installed in yesterday and did a new, fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium. Everything worked great, no issues, fast boot. Plugged in the passport. Works. Plugged in the 1TB. Recognizes it but doesn't appear as a drive. Light on the front of the external is solid, not blinking as you would expect during normal operation. Hmm. Plugged in the 300GB, a drive appears but gives no info, when I try to load it a green status bar starts and never finishes, just sits there. Also, booting on the new drive with the externals plugged in causes hangup at the splash screen. So I'm thinking my caviar is perfectly fine (there goes $200 bucks for a new drive and new copy of windows).

So.. help? I plugged the 1TB into my girlfriend's laptop and it started right up, no issues. But will not appear on my computer.

How can I uninstall anything that might have been installed when plugging in the 300 GB? I think this drive is the issue. Before I switched internal drives, the 1TB was still working and I was able to transfer files there.

Edit* I think I've narrowed the problem to the 300 GB External. I managed to get the 1TB Mybook to install by uninstalling the device and plugging it back in. Came right up. The 300 continues to do nothing when I plug it in except attempt to make a drive path that doesn't work. Guess I bought the velociraptor for nothing.

Solution
Hey there, Altephor!

I'm so sorry to hear about your issues with the 300GB WD My Book! 🙁
However, congrats on the troubleshooting, you did a great job narrowing down the problem. Since it gets recognized, can you go to Disk Management and see if the WD My Book 300 GB appears there? Please share the status of the drive.
I would also recommend running Data LifeGuard on the drive and check up on the health and SMART status. Make sure you run the quick and the extended test. Here's a link to the utility: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=BNRY2F

P.S. You should have tested the WD Blue's health before giving up on it. However, I think that the VelociRaptor will give you a great boost of performance. Hopefully this will make you...

The drive does appear in disk management, and actually appears (after a while) under my computer, but just as a hard drive icon (no status bar saying xx gb free of xx space). When I try to open the drive in my computer, a green status bar starts loading in the directory tab. It takes a few minutes, and the green bar continues to 'load', but then just stops at the end. The drive does not open and windows explorer stops responding.

Not too worried about the blue, going to reconnect it and format and use it as storage to replace the space lost with this 300 GB.

Should also mention that the 300 GB external also does not work on my girlfriend's laptop. Does the same thing.

Have you tried testing it with the diagnostics utility Data LifeGuard yet? (the link above)
It should get recognized by the tool since it appears in Disk Management and is recognized as a device. DLG will let you get a closer look on the HDD's health and SMART status.
However, it has most probably failed to the point of no saving. I'm afraid that it's out of warranty as well, you know, it's been quite some time since we last produced 300 GB My Book externals. :/ I am glad that you know how to keep your data safe and have everything backed up, though! Also great plan with putting the Blue back into use by replacing the storage lost with the WD My Book.
I hope everything works out for you! You can still test that 300 GB Book to see how bad is the damage on it.

Good luck! Let me know if there's anything else I can help with! :)

I will have to try testing it. Unfortunately, the data on this drive was not backed up, so I've just lost a lot of music. Not a big deal. Strange that it died so suddenly since I was using it less than a week ago.

I'm very sorry to hear about that, Altephor!
Unfortunately, hard drives are so sensitive that you can never predict how long they will last, which is why we recommend multiple backups on-site as well as off-site. This is the only way to avoid the headaches of data loss.

Good luck with everything! Hope I was helpful! :)
