Hi there,

Today, for 4 hours, I went nuts working with Uverse 3800HGV-B.
This small store has only this modem/router.
When attached to Port 2 of the Uverse, my Opiplex has internet in DHCP mode.
When I configure the optiplex as 192.168.1.60 (so it is out of the DHCP range of 192.168.1.64 to 192.168.1.254), subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and Gateway as 192.168.1.254, i have NO internet access. There is no other device within the network configured as 192.168.1.60 (using advanced IP scanner).
The owner mentioned that he did have an IT guy who charged him $100 to manage his single laptop.
Since this is a surveillance Optiplex, I must have static IP.
What am I doing wrong? I am too dumb to figure out.
Thanks so much for your help.

In the Techworld, there's no perfect solution to any Electronics devices. If your Boss think its the IT Guy messed it up, then you should ask him to get that IT Guy back for "Warranty of Service" before he'll blame it on you.
192.168.1.254 is a very odd IP address for a gateway. Typically the gateway occupies the first host IP in a subnet, and is always outside of the DHCP range. There's no technical reason for this, it's really just convention, but it's usually observed. A common gateway IP address would be 192.168.1.1 for a /24. The network IP address would be 192.168.1.0 and broadcast would be 192.168.1.255. Hosts 192.168.1.64-192.168.1.254 may form a DHCP block, and hosts 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.63 are available for static allocation.

What did you set the dns server as on the optiplex? If this is not set or set wrongly this can also cause devices to fail to connect to the internet. Most times it should be the router but occasionally it's a public dns server beyond the router. I would suggest setting it to the google dns server (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4) and see if it get internet access then.

I know with ATT U-verse the default gateway and DNS server IP are the same it should be 192.168.1.254 for both. I know it might sound odd but with every ATT U-Verse I have seen that is how it is.
